Vaping near Children

A vaping shop has just opened in my area. The issue I have with this is that it is in a family community on a small row of busy local shops and shares the car park with a play school forcing parents to take children past it. It is the largest shop with big windows and vaping products on display. It is opposite a busy church with several Sunday school groups and also in the central location of no less than 6 schools all in easy walking distance. The car park is also shared with the community hall, library, doctors, dentist and church hall. Whats everyones thoughts on this?
A couple of places in America have changed the laws so vaping shops can not open with in a close proximity to schools or places of worship- should it be the same in the UK?

Why should they be banned around churches or schools? It's not like it's a sex shop. I don't get your problem with it.

deadsexy · 17/02/2019 20:23

Oh come on really? This is stopping people smoking! Surely that's better! Have they actually don't anything wrong with vaping?

Ffsnosexallowed · 17/02/2019 20:24

I think it should be easier for kids to buy vape stuff than tobacco, so yabu.

user1496701154 · 17/02/2019 20:48

Hope there's an other way to get to the park I hate vapes and vapes shops far to many of them and hate when people vape next to me and little one, its disgusting I agree they should be ban near schools

ChakiraChakra · 17/02/2019 20:49
Hmm
deadsexy · 17/02/2019 21:23

User I totally disagree I think the world is a much better place because of vaping. I don't smoke or vape, but I love that it's a rare thing for me to smell tobacco now, love that my old man of 72 has been off the roll ups for 3 years now and uses these. He had the worse cough for all of my life and now he just doesn't, his skin is lovely now and he's took up walking.

I just see these shops as the lesser of 2 evils and I'd much rather them being there than more smokers

Namechangeok · 17/02/2019 21:27

I don't like them really, they look awful but can't bring myself to get wound up by their presence. My town has bookies, numerous pubs etc so I can't see why vaping shops shouldn't be allowed.

MrsJamin · 17/02/2019 21:29

Why on earth would you have a problem with it? Get over yourself!

OrigamiZoo · 17/02/2019 21:31

Well alcohol is far farm more harmful and there is one on every street corner.

Jem4 · 17/02/2019 22:47

I agree that vaping is a great tool to help people stop smoking. Good on everyone that has made this decision to vape instead of smoke. However, would preventing vaping shops being placed in a quiet community with in 500 - 1000feet of an education that children walk past daily on a school run, stop anyone who currently vapes make a conscious decision to stop?
Issues are reported regarding vaping in schools, having a shop on a school run with colourful gadget style vapes and sweetie flavours can only encourage use in school children.
Alcohol shops and bookies are already about, do we add vaping shops to the list or make a positive impact. We have a chance now to make a change to where vaping shops should be placed in proximity to children's educational centres and as a parent I think it is responsible to consider it.

Jesus. Get a hobby.

tilly1989 · 17/02/2019 22:59

A vape shop has recently opened up around the corner from my daughter school and as a vape user I find it vary useful that I no longer have to go out of my way to buy my liquids, I can just nip into the shop on my way home and it's less tempting to go corner shop for cigarettes

squeekums · 17/02/2019 23:05

No issue for me.

Seems you have too much time on your hands.
Personally id rather a vape store over a church near me
Least the vape store wont bang on my door wasting my time to spread the word

Drogosnextwife · 17/02/2019 23:07

Do you take your kids into the shops where they sell alcohol and cigarettes? Of course you do.

Shookethtothecore · 17/02/2019 23:09

Unclench your pearls love, it’s all gunna be ok

Lichtie · 17/02/2019 23:14

No vape shops near places of worship? 😂 Who has time for this nonsense

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 17/02/2019 23:18

You sound very stressed. Maybe you should take up smoking.Grin

Jem4 · 18/02/2019 12:42

One of my issues with it is the shear size and proportion of the storefront in comparison to the other shops. And the luminous, hideous purple signage. Like this is the cornerstone of the street.

In Response to Drogosnextwife Yes I do - It is called Tesco and they also sell e-cigeretes.

@deadsexy everyone is entitled to their own opinions as soemone with chronic asthma it hurts my chest massive fumes and someone with a young child I agree when people vape near me in public or at the bus station where it is not permitted

FordPrefect42 · 19/02/2019 00:05

I’m on the fence on this one; I do think there’s the issue of not knowing what chemicals are in these liquids and also children could be enticed to try them if they are being advertised near schools - that’s why McDonalds (other fast food restaurants are available) aren’t allowed to advertise near schools so why should these shops be able to? At the same time, I respect that these have helped many individuals stop smoking and the smell is generally better than real smoke when you walk past it (but as I’m autistic I still find it a little much).

FordPrefect42 · 19/02/2019 00:06

It actually makes my chest feel odd too, User.

AuntMarch · 19/02/2019 10:51

I stopped smoking by vaping, but when I fell pregnant not only did I stop immediately (not enough research yet for my liking), I couldn't stand to be around the smell of it from my ExP- I would rather smell cigarettes!
So I was all ready for this post to be about actually vaping around children. It made me feel sick so I would never do it around my baby if I did end up taking it up again.

But you don't seem to have a problem with anybody actually doing it. Just having children walk past the shop?

I have always been of the opinion that children are more intrigued by the unknown. If I'd walked past a window display of cigarettes daily and had conversations with my parents about it, instead of it being so "naughty"- I night never have done it!

I do accept that my opinion on this may change masisve when my own child is here though!!

Jem4 · 19/02/2019 20:25

It's interesting to hear how it has an effect people with asthma.
Personally I have no issue with people making their own choices. If people choose to smoke, vape, drink, gamble then that is their choice.

The government has not presently banned vaping in any particular location, the decision to allow vaping in any space is at the behest of the property owner. They also want vaping in offices which I find terrible. I personally would not want to sit next to someone vaping all day especially when long term heath risks are yet unknown. I find it dreadfully sad that Wales plans to ban e-cigarettes for the first time in the UK in public places where children are present were defeated.
'The landmark vote by the Welsh Assembly aimed to restrict the use of nicotine inhaling devices in public places such as schools, restaurants and on public transport.
But the contentious legislation was defeated by just one vote in the Sened.' It seems that the rights of vapers are being put before the rights of everyone else and we are being told to put up with it as it is less harmful than smoking and hopefully will get more people to stop. I think it is amazing that people are choosing a less harmful option by vaping but very strongly feel that this should not impact on the environment of everyone else. To me it seems MP's are suggesting that if we don't allow it everywhere and restrict to vaping areas then people who are smoking are going to stick to smoking and those that made a choice to change to vaping will return to smoking. As for vaping shops I don't think they should be placed close to schools and children centres. There is a pharmacy next door that sells e-cigarettes with out having a massive shop dedicated to it so yes it does upset me a lot to see it taking over the pervious family vibe of the area. I also agree with AuntMarch that the more we inform our children of the dangers of things they are more well informed to make their own choices. However I don't believe I need a landmark to instigate these conversations.
On an end note the NHS say 'some health professionals recommend avoiding using them around pregnant women babies and children.'

I think it's a shame that we should even need to think about restricting use.
Having been both a smoker and a vape user I was always very aware of my surroundings - moving a good distance away from a queue at a bus stop, not smoking while walking down busy streets, always trying to avoid being seen by children. Even in a pub garden I'd try and choose a table further away from others at the edge of the garden.
I've never understood the logic of those who think just because they want to enjoy something it should mean everyone else has to put up with it. It's just bloody anti social and gives us all a bad name!
