Hello,

I'm just wondering when everyone switched to blue top milk?? My little girl is one this month so I'm starting to think about it. I know the guidelines say from age 1 but did mummies wait a little while or get them straight on it?? My little girl is a bottle fed baby.

My daughter has had full fat milk in her cereal since 12 months and some In a bottle for a drink since 14 months :)

Pretty much bang on 12 months once the formula tin ran out I started her on cows milk. She’d had it in cereal before and I did one bottle a day for the first 2 days just to see then brought the second one in.

Her0utdoors · 17/02/2019 09:46

In food and the odd drink from weaning, in a cup from 10-11 months. Semi skimmed from 2 years, as per nhs advice.

I switched when they turned one(once the last tub of formula had run out).

But I did introduce a little in a cup once they had dropped their afternoon bottle and had a snack instead. That would have been 10/11 months. It wasn’t replacing any feeds just a little taste to get them used to it.

They are 2, 6 & 8 and still love milk.

reallybadidea · 17/02/2019 09:55

I did it gradually over a few days once they'd turned 1 and the formula tin was running down. So, first few days I made up 6oz formula and 2oz cow's milk. A few days later it was 4oz of each and then the last few days it was 2oz formula and 6oz milk. Just seemed like a good way to transition.

Full change at 11 months he was two weeks off coming off fourmla and I was kit buying another one for 10 quid

Copperbeaches · 17/02/2019 20:30

Hi
Any advice if you lo won't drink cow's milk . We tried 6oz formula and 2milk and reduced but couldn't get further than 3/4 formula rest cow's milk as he either refused it spat it or swallowed it then sicked it up! Also refused it in ceral
He is 13 months .
Life would be easier and cheaper if like cow's milk !

NannyR · 17/02/2019 20:38

copperbeaches - I would just go cold turkey on the formula milk. He's going to have to move on from formula at some point and it will be easier now rather than leaving it till he's older. Continue to offer cows milk, maybe in a new, novel cup or with a straw, rather than a bottle, but don't get stressed if he refuses it - as long as he's eating yoghurt, cheese, green leafy veg etc he'll be ok for calcium.

I’ve been wondering this myself! My baby is 10 months old and still drinks up to 30oz formula per day (he’s very big) on top of 3 meals a day. We’re trying to reduce it so he eats more of his solids and then move onto cows’ milk when he turns 1. But I don’t know how to go about it. Surely he won’t be having 900ml of cows’ milk in a couple of months?

graciesmammy · 17/02/2019 21:00

I'm also wondering... my daughter gets 7 ounces on a morning , 7 on an afternoon and 7 on a nighttime does this need to be dropped?? Or do I just replace her bottles with cows milk

My DD has just turned 1. I'm waiting to finish the formula tin then I'll go to cows milk and hope for the best! She's had it in cereal for a while but not to drink yet. My Health Visitor told me that once she turned one to offer cows milk as a drink with breakfast (in cup or bottle) and keep the evening bottle before bed but that was it. I dropped her mid afternoon bottle about 2 months ago and offered water and a snack instead.

Copperbeaches · 17/02/2019 21:18

NannyR . I was thinking of doing that my only reason why I haven't yet is that he hardly drinks any water or juice literally 1-2 oz a day max ,with most of it being spat out !! Im worried he will dehydrate but I'm guessing if he is thirsty he will drink ,won't he ?!

Jackshouse · 17/02/2019 21:21

Changed at 11 months under peds dietian’s advice to regular soya milk due to suspected allergy. Switched from bottles to beakers durring the day at 12 months.

Redken24 · 17/02/2019 21:24

I mixed the bottles with blue milk.
I think like 3/4 then 1/2 then 1/4 then just blue milk. My lo liked blue milk so I could probably have just switched it. I also just gave her a 360 cup with milk at night

graciesmammy · 17/02/2019 21:28

This may seem like a stupid question but do you give the milk warm or cold ?? My daughters used to having her milk warm but I'm sure somebody told me blue top milk has to be brought to the boil then cooled?? I may have made that up completely Hmm

My daughter started on full fat goats milk which is a lot easier digested and healthier. She is now 11 and will not drink anything else.

Jackshouse · 17/02/2019 21:31

You can just warm it up for a little bit either in the microwave but you must shake very well or in a jug of hot water little a formula bottle.

flowersaremyfave · 17/02/2019 21:31

Yep as soon as mine have turned one I've switched.

NannyR · 17/02/2019 21:32

copperbeaches I find that babies tend to start drinking a lot more once they cut down on their milk bottles, you could try offering water in a "grown up" sports bottle to get him to drink a bit more. You can give foods like cucumber, watermelon, tomatoes that have a high water content too.

Mumshappy · 17/02/2019 21:39

Ds 10months will be getting it when he turns one. I mixed it with formula for both dds and gradually reduced the formula. He still has 9oz in a morning (half in cereal, porridge or weetabix), 7oz mid morning and 9oz before bed. I will be changing the mid morning bottle to a cup shortly. He has water in a cup with lunch and tea. Then next month ill put the morning formula in a cup. So when i introduce cows milk there will only be one feed in a bottle before bed. I will warm this one. Then a few weeks later it will go in a cup.

Hairymess · 17/02/2019 21:44

The advice is to stop all bottles at 1 so I did it all over the space of a couple of weeks. About a week before 1st birthday, I changed from formula to cows milk in the bottle (just one night time bottle by then, but also in a cup with breakfast and dinner, and in cereal), then focussed on getting rid of the bottles altogether after the birthday so by about 1y 2 weeks, all the bottles got packed away and it was such a relief! Food intake will increase when the bottles are dropped (that's a good thing - more nutrients) and they can still have milk a few times a day, just a smaller amount and from a cup so there's no issue with teats and no drinking milk right before bed. Good luck!

Caterina99 · 18/02/2019 03:20

With both of mine I started around 11 months by swapping first the lunchtime bottle for a sippy cup of milk, and then the morning one. By 12 months ish they were just on the one bottle before bed and cups the rest of the time. Then I changed that bottle to cows milk. Then I dropped that bottle for a cup. My DD is 16 months and has been off all formula since she was around 13 months and all bottles since 15 months. She typically had a cup of milk with breakfast, one with or after lunch (before her nap) and one after dinner before bed.

Lots of different methods though. I’ve friends that just went completely cold turkey at 12m. And friends that were still on 4 bottles of formula a day at nearly 2. They all get there in the end
