I have a 5 month old who I've tried reading to since birth. Sadly, he'll look anywhere else but at the book. He shows no interest in any of it. Should I give up? Try again when he's a little older?

I was actually hyperlexic, mind, so I was reading Winnie-the-Pooh at 2. Not Dickens though lol! Five months is really young, most babies of that age can’t even say one word 😆

Just work them into the routine, after bath before bed. Short cardboard books.

At that sort of age I did more singing and storytelling... the three little pigs with lots of huffing and puffing was popular (well, I enjoyed it anyway)Grin

At 5 months old mine finished game of thrones, even the ones that weren’t written!

I remember wanting to read but small dc take up time. So I used to sit DS in his bouncy chair and read my own novel to him. Making eye contact and reading with gusto and emphasis on words in the way you do to engage small children. I had worked in a public library and had actually read stories to large classes of dc many times. I doubt Cranford has been read in this way many times.

He wasn’t interested in the actual book but he loved how I engaged with him. I did of course give him cloth books and board books as soon as he could wave stuff about. At 5 months it’s just a thing to chew, throw, feel.

@notacooldad you're right. I think I read all the comments and your comment was the last I read so I took out my frustration on you since you were the last and apparently my scapegoat. I apologise.

Try puppet books or ones with flaps. My son loves Wheres Spot and another book Incy wincy spider which has a small puppet spider the whole way through it.
It wasnt until around 6/7 months he began to really enjoy books.

My 9 month old daughter LOVES books but more as an object/toy. If I try reading to her she's not interested. And also she will try to turn the page before I've finished a sentence 😂

Her favourite book is one that has a mirror on the last page. She likes to give herself kisses 😍
