Newborn not reacting to loud noise

Hi, just looking for a bit of reassurance. My daughter is 3 days old and passed her hearing test. But now we’re home I’ve noticed she doesn’t jump or react to unpredictable loud noises. Our house is pretty lively, but she’s not waking or jumping to sounds that even make me jump (worlds LOUDEST doorbell, barking dog, plates clashing). I know it’s early days, and I’m probably jumping the gun, but it’s my first and I just want to know is this normal?

Your daughter has been hearing all those sounds for months in the womb, and is generally experiencing a total sensory overload at the moment

It’s completely normal, and you’ll find she starts reacting with the startle reflex over the coming days - not just to sounds, but being picked up, put down, changed, dressed...

Totally agree with ten.

Congratulations on your new LO Thanks

My little one fell asleep just before a pipe band started. Slept right through it!

Enjoy this stage. I remember hoovering around DD when she was asleep. She then started becoming sensitive to noise and nap time had to be in total silence.... such a pain...

Tonsilsofdoom · 16/02/2019 23:09

I was concerned about this too OP but as PP have said, as the days went by she started to gradually startle at noises and just about everything!

Enjoy the bit where you can do almost anything with them and they stay asleep! 😊

I'm glad we're past the startle stage now (although obviously she does still react to loud noises) as I remember it making it so hard to put her down!

@CatsOnCatnip we took our 3 week old to Bonfire night. She slept through the whole lot of fireworks and only woke when we got home and the house was quiet 🤷🏻‍♀️

My little one slept through anything at that age. Hell hes 18 months now will sleep through a drill bit momma goes to the toilet or leaves the room he wakes up 😂

Thanks so much guys! I knew I was being paranoid but it’s so nice to be able to see it with fresh eyes. The first baby anxiety is real! 😩😂

Fire alarm went off when ds was three days old...no reaction at all. I even breathed loudly near him - awake. Babies are odd!

Took eight week old to NYE dinner and there were fireworks on the restaurant terrace. Blooming loud ones going on for ever. DD slept through every bang. Grin

I don’t think mine reacted to any kind of loud noise until he was about month old. The health visitor and midwives asked every time they came, which was a lot as I had extra visits for various reasons, and it made me really paranoid. Eventually one day a visitor plonked some cutlery on the table (just as he was falling asleep and I could’ve eaten my dinner in peace with both hands Envy) and he jumped out of his skin!

Cathster · 18/02/2019 11:51

Completely normal at that young. She's used to all sorts of noises from being inside you.

The health visitor should do a hearing test soon, I can't remember exactly when it is but think it's around 7-10 days.

My ten month old now startles (and cries) if someone god forbid coughs or sneezes, it's hilarious (and not annoying at all)

Congratulations on your new baby Thanks

DD was 3 days old, just home from the hospital and had gone down for a nap...and they started roadworks right outside our front window.

I was about to go and shout at them (yay PP hormones) but DD slept through it.

This is actually something freaking me out. My 2 week old baby was tested in the hospital when he was born and all went well but today he has not reacted to the fire alarm that I accidentally have set off twice. He was awake in the kitchen with me when it went off. I definitely think he can hear but it seems odd the lack of response/ startled to the noise?
