Constant coughing?

Hi all, my 14mo has a cough which has been with us on and off for about 4 months. I know this is all normal and expected but over the last day and night she has been coughing constantly to the point of being sick. She seems ok in herself, no temp, nappies ok, and it's not croupy but I wanted to ask if this is normal to be literally coughing every second? It sounds quite chesty and she is very snotty which doesn't help.

My DH is insistent that I take her back to the doctors and demand something for it but I'm not convinced there's anything they can do!

I could have written this, my Lo is same age and has this constant awful cough. It’s been three days and she has made herself vomit a couple of times with the coughing. It’s waking her at night so I’m shattered too, poor thing I feel so sorry for her. I haven’t found anything that helps, just giving calpol and hoping it goes quickly! I may take her to the doctors tomorrow for them to check her chest as I worry about chest infections when they are so small. Hope your Lo improves quickly too!

My 15 month old is currently on his fifth week of coughing, it gets worse at night too so that's five weeks of shit sleep for everyone, been seen by doctors a number of times and sent away. I feel your pain Sad

At that age, and with it going on for so long, I would get it checked. We have a minor illness clinic at our surgery run by the nurse which is really useful for this sort of thing (getting GP appt is impossible)

We've also had constant coughing. Colds on and off briefly since October last year. My little one started nursery in September. We've had 3 loads of antibiotics as well and just finished the last batch. I think she's slowly getting better, but like another poster said I just take her to he docs to check her chest and ears, beyond that there is nothing more you can do. The last check up that led to antibiotics was because the nurse heard crackling on the chest so potential chest infection starting up. The cough now sounds dry and is getting better slowly. I do feel it's been one long winter of coughing maybe with a few weeks here and there of no coughing. So glad when the winter in the UK is over x

Oh forgot to say LO is 17 months now

My 2.5 year old DD is the exact same at the moment. I took her to the doctors as I said it reminded me of my asthma, it was just different to her other coughs. He said it is viral asthma and gave her a pump. So hopefully hers will go in a while. He said in most instances where children cough to the point of throwing up, it tends to be asthma. However, it does run in our family so may be worth checking?

Yes I was thinking maybe asthma? Coughing at night is a symptom.

littlestrawby · 11/02/2019 22:26

Thanks everyone, sorry to hear others are in the same boat...misery loves company eh!!

@loveautum it's interesting that you mention the crackling chest as my DD has sounded a bit crackly today...maybe I will take her in after all as we're off on hols on Friday so would want to make sure she's ok before that. Been seen a few times by docs over the course of the winter just to check chest was ok and it was always fine, they've been lovely but they're probably losing patience with me Grin

I just can't wait until cough and cold season is over, it feels like my poor baby has been under the weather for half of her life! :(

@DollyTots and @Bananarama12 I did have asthma as a child, albeit seem to have grown out of it now if that is even possible? So yes maybe worth checking out again. Thank you!

@littlestrawby aw good luck at the docs, I appreciate they are careful about giving out antibiotics now, in fact the nurse who checked her over then checked with the doctor before he gave me the prescription. It does sound like your little one might benefit from a course of antibiotics if the cough is in the chest and you can hear the crackling, plus it's been on going for a while and the sickness poor little thing. Hope you have a lovely holiday and your LO is on the mend soon x

Coughing all that time is not normal. It may be asthma or some other underlying respiratory problem. We cough to clear our airways. Constant coughing means its not clearing. ? Mucus ? Inflammation?

Bananarama12 · 12/02/2019 05:44

I've finally got an inhaler for my 14mo after a hospital admission when he found it hard to breathe. He was coughing at night, especially after cows milk (that seems to irritate his asthma I've now found out) and crackling chest all day. He's all better now but I think it's called viral asthma so with every cough/cold they get they just need a bit of extra help.
