Silvercross car seat/pram concerns!

Hi all!

I’ve been snooping on mums net for some time throughout pregnancy and decided to sign up.

I gave birth to a beautiful little girl, my first, she was a tiny 5lb 6 and still a tiny 5lb 13. I’m hoping to take her out soon, reason I haven’t is because it’s so cold recently and with her being small I didn’t want to risk it. Layla is now 15 days old and I think with the weather becoming a bit milder we should venture out tomorrow.

I have a silver cross wayfarer travel system and currently using the car seat as the pram. I am slightly worried as she is small that she slumps her head forward. She doesn’t seem to mind but surely this could be dangerous? I am going to slightly turn her head as I know this is the natural position. The manual doesn’t state how to adjust/recline if needs be. So I don’t think there’s an option.

So my question, am I being over cautious about this? I was worried when I were discharged from hospital about her head being forward in the car seat but as I say she didn’t seem to mind.

Has anyone experienced this problem? And well is it really a problem? Haha. I’m seeing everything as a big worry right now. Maybe I just need to relax a little...

I was also worried about the head slumping and opurposely bought a lay flat car seat, there are not so many on the market so I had to do a bit of research, probably not an option if you’ve already paid for a car seat. Do you have a carry cot attachment for your pram? If so, why not use that and just go for a walk?

Bigonesmallone3 · 04/02/2019 20:52

U shouldn't be using the car seat as a pram, use the car seat for car travel (with her newborn insert)
Use the pram baby will be much more comfy

Bigonesmallone3 · 04/02/2019 20:54

And congratulations :)

I worried about that and use the same pram, did you not get the cot bit with it? Think the recommendation is for them to be laid flat and not spend longer than 30 minutes in a car seat ... I just tried to avoid the car journeys until baby is a bit older. Hope you get on okay trying to get out of the house 😀

newnamewhosthis · 04/02/2019 20:56

I echo what @Bigonesmallone3 said.

I had the exact pram system and would not use the car seat as a pram.

Use the bassinet when needed. I would only use the car seat on the chassis when we were going somewhere she would be coming out of it ie visiting or playgroup

Jackshouse · 04/02/2019 20:58

Under 6 weeks old babies should only be in the car seat for necessary car journeys and for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time.

Your baby should really be in a bassinet.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 04/02/2019 20:59

The car seat shouldn't be used as a pram seat. Use the carrycot. I k ow the seat is convenient but it really isn't recommended especially with tiny babies.

xEmmzie87 · 04/02/2019 21:17

Thank you all! The manual says you can use it as a pram but as I have said and you all agree it doesn’t look comfortable. It’s a travel system so it comes with the carry cot so I will use that. She will look so lost bless her!

So when she gets older, will she sit better in the car seat? It’s a shame it can’t be adjusted, only the straps.

Feel more comfortable after the responses, I’m still nervous taking her out though. Thank you all

I had that travel system. The car seat had just that - a seat for driving baby in the car. I put it into the chassis if we were going from the car to a baby group where my sin would be taken out straight away. Otherwise I used the carry cot section.

Cutesbabasmummy · 04/02/2019 21:20

She will look better in it when she gets a bit bigger by the way and when she has some control over her head x

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 04/02/2019 21:25

We have the same system for DD.

As others have said- the car seat clipping onto the pram chassis is for quickly nipping into the shop directly from the car, or baby group etc.

Just use the bassinet- it’s lovely and comfy and one of the massive pluses to the Wayfarer. If I had a choice I know which I’d rather sit in!

Thank you all so much. I feel a little daft now but one thing I have realised is that motherhood is a learning experience. I really appreciate it

The advice is that a newborn shouldn't be in the car seat for more than 30 minutes at a time.

As you have noticed, they encourage the baby to be squashed in a position that compromises their airway.

Travel systems are designed to make it convenient to transfer the baby from the car onto the pushchair chassis but only for a short transfer.

You would be best buying the pram carrycot attachment for the pushchair.

INeedNewShoes · 04/02/2019 21:30

Gosh, don't feel daft. So many parents don't know about the car seat issue. It's scary really that it isn't better publicised.

xEmmzie87 · 04/02/2019 21:34

I have to say, it isn’t well published. When I googled it I got conflicting information. But I were so concerned on how she looked in it when I were discharged from hospital. So glad I posted this now!

SC seats used to come with a wedge for little babies and head hugger. Can you angle the adapters on the chassis it does it clip on in a fixed position.

xEmmzie87 · 04/02/2019 23:08

It clips into a fixed position unfortunately.
Maybe the name ‘car seat’ should of prompted me to know it shouldn’t be used as a pram as such. Feel more stupid the more I think about it haha

Your instincts are clearly on point op otherwise u would never of asked the question and received all this advice

TakemebacktoClifton · 04/02/2019 23:14

OP I have the exact same Pram and car seat and when my DD was a newborn I had the same issue. She never looked comfortable and her head seemed to look like it was balancing precariously. She was ok though.

I didn’t use the car seat as a pram until she was around 2 months old, but you can but they recommend no longer than 30 minutes. I’d use the carry cot for now.

TheOrangeOwl · 04/02/2019 23:24

Have the pioneer (so bigger than the wayfarer) and my DC was 5lb 6oz too. On day 3 we went out with him, and as long as he's wrapped up it's fine! But stick with the carrycot. And as for the car seat, we had to use it on day 1 and 2 and I put a finger under his chin so it couldn't drop on his chest.

xEmmzie87 · 04/02/2019 23:28

I did exactly that on the day of discharge from the hospital I put my finger under her chin cause I were so worried.

Wow. I guess I will just worry all my life now haha, being a mum, and a first time mum at that is just a worrying time (usually for no reason st all)

Thank you all!!

xEmmzie87 you've put your daughter's name in your original post. You might want to get HQ to edit it out

Elizabeth2019 · 05/02/2019 09:39

I did the same as you on the hospital drive back, freaked out a bit and went and brought a different car seat Blush .... but my little one is now big enough to use the silver cross one in daddy’s car so it wasn’t a waste.
