Upright pram at 11 weeks old

Hi my baby is 11 weeks old and very tall, he only just fits into his carrycot now but I have read that you shouldn’t sit babies in the upright position until they are 6 months, is this correct? I just worry he won’t fit the carrycot soon, I sat him in the upright position today and he seemed ok but just after some advice really. I might ask my Hv this week too about it

There is a recommendation for a reason, in my experience a lot of people use the seat unit from around 5 months but 3 months is very young..
I wouldn't do it but I'm no expert

Usually as they get older they bend their knees when on their back so it doesn’t matter if he’s a little longer than the carrycot. He will tell you if he’s not comfy.

I think slightly upright (but still mostly reclined) is ok from about 4/5 months but I certainly wouldn’t put him upright at 11 weeks.

Yes the advice is correct and has been for years. If he won’t fit the carrycot, use the stroller in its lowest position

Agree with pp, lie the stroller flat

My daughter is on the 92nd centile for height and she fit into the carrcot until she was 5 months. Your son must be very long!

The right age to move a baby into an upright roam is when they can control their head movements for sustained periods of time. A baby’s head is very heavy and if their neck and spine aren’t developed properly, the weight of the head will damage them.

Does your pram not lie flat? Or almost flat? I have long babies and had to stop using the carry cot a bit earlier than I wanted but I just reclined the pram as flat as it would go.

TeddyIsaHe · 04/02/2019 07:09

The advice is because sitting upright for prolonged periods of time can cause spinal damage.

Keep him in the carrycot as long as possible, and then move to the pram but lay it down flat.

Thanks ladies, will stick with the carrycot until he’s 6 months and hopefully he won’t grow too much longer. I’m using an uppababy Cruz pram but what I don’t get is that the snug insert that I bought as an extra is from 0-6 months but if he can’t go in the seat until 6 months anyway then it’s a dud buy ( just pre warning anyone else that bought one too)

If you have the Cruz then it lies totally flat and can be used from birth with the snug insert (with the seat flat) - just don’t sit the seat up and it’s fine?

I did it with DD but only because she screamed if she couldn't see out. I had it as reclined as she would tolerate!
