SCREAMING. Is it possible to discourage it, or am I wasting my time?

Anyone else experienced this?

DS is 4 months old and has discovered his voice. It’s pretty cute. He makes little noises and seems to be copying consonant sounds, which I’m very impressed with.

What I’m not so happy about, however, is this screeching sound that he keeps making. There’s no real pattern to it - he screeches when he’s happy, tired, bored, restless. All.The.Time.

It’s driving me insane and it’s such a horrible noise! I think he’s doing it to get a reaction from me, so I’ve stopped responding to it and instead I’m trying to pay him lots of attention when he’s ‘talking’ quietly to teach him.

Has anyone else suffered from this ear-splitting nightmare? How long did it last? Am I wasting my efforts in trying to discourage him from doing it?

Thanks in advance!

I dont think you should stop it, he is just discovering his vocals, its a natural thing.

My DD did the screeching thing for a few weeks then moved onto a new sound.

Yip 5 months in and it’s changed to almost a constant blowing of raspberries. As if the drooling wasn’t bad enough Sad

How long has he been doing it for? Mine used to discover a new highly irritating noise every couple of weeks and I'd have to try to ignore it, at least he seemed to forget the previous one when he moved on to the next one Confused

Normal at this age, but keep an eye (ear?) on it. NDD has a kid that did this from a very early age, and still does it at 4 years old. She has excellent verbal skills but just screams like she is being savaged multiple times a day. Not as part of a meltdown or when angry - just randomly. Bored? For attention? I don't know but parents totally ignore it and always have and it clearly hasn't worked! I'm hoping it will be nipped in the bud when she starts school.

I’m sorry to resurrect this thread after so long, guys, but unfortunately he’s still doing it! I’ve bought earplugs at the weekend because I can’t stand it anymore.

I just wondered whether anyone whose DC have done this horrible screeching sound actually found that there was a problem? It’s gone on for a while now and I’m starting to wonder whether there is something wrong... Confused

He screams when he’s tired - I’ve figured that out, but screams also at random, often looking quite unhappy about something. It’s definitely not a, “look at me, I’m happy making lots of unbearable noise!” sound.

I’m thinking of calling the health visitor tomorrow but I bothered her so much in the early days with questions, I’m sure she thinks I’m totally neurotic. . .

My Dd was a screamer. She screamed all the time. Then she learned a word or 2 at 11 months and the screaming stopped, although I'm not convinced she didn't have reflux. The younger Dd screamed too and then I switched her to comfort formula after trying gaviscon for a bit (didn't work) and I was desperate. The comfort formula sorted it, despite he GP and HV telling me it wouldn't make any difference - but it did within 48 hrs.

AllesAusLiebe · 13/03/2019 21:51

Iliketeaagain thanks for your reply. He’s on comfort formula now because I had a nightmare with breastfeeding in the early days and I think he suffered with colic. We noticed an improvement after switching him to comfort milk, but all of that seems to have gone full circle now. Sad

I wondered about reflux. What other symptoms did your DC have, if you don’t mind me asking? He does sick up some of his milk from time to time, but not very often, so I’d pretty much ruled reflux out.

She sicked up milk often, but not immediately after a feed iyswim. So sometimes after an hour or so, she would scream and then bring up a little bit of milk, rather than right away, almost like when you get indigestion. And scream at random times as if something hurt her all of a sudden.
