Baby very cold hands in warm room

Hi mumnetters

To put it out there: I'm an overthinker and quite anxious. This is since having my baby 7 months ago. I have posted about loads of shit on here and I find it helpful.

I know that you can't test a baby's temp by feeling their hands. Her body is warm, and the room thermometer reads 20°. She had a 2 tog sleeping bag on, long sleeved vest and a babygro on. (Overnight temp drops to about 17° hence the extra layer)

I've just gone up to comfort her as she's got a bit worked up, but her hands are very cold. I realised that for the whole day her hands have been quite chilly which seems odd when the house has been 20/21° today. Usually her hands are warm.

Is this anything to be worried about? Overnight her hands are usually cold but obv I assume that's fine. It's specifically becuase it's been all day, even when the room is warm, if you see.

God, I'm driving myself mad. Fuck.

This is normal. You are over thinking. Get some sleep 🙂

Datedandold · 02/02/2019 21:44

It’s a baby thing, if you need to feel how warm/cool they are, try their back kind of between the top of their shoulder blades.

My daughter had cold hands for about the first three years of her life!

Normal normal normal.

I actually squeaked before when DC2s cold hands touched my neck whilst she was feeding.

She was definitely warm enough otherwise.

My dds hands have always been cold. I squeeze them to warm them up when I feed feed her. It’s become a bit of a game for her now.
Baby should be fine with a room temp of 16-20 degrees.

Thanks everyone. Thanks for not being sarcastic or taking the piss. I feel better.

Dd is now 4 and generally runs hot - had a dress on yesterday lol!! But she has always had cold hands from birth

Didiusfalco · 02/02/2019 21:53

Don’t worry. If your baby is actually too cold she will wake you up. It’s if she is too warm that you need to worry as she won’t (but don’t worry - I’m sure you are doing great!)

headinhands · 02/02/2019 22:08

My nose is chilly right now.

gamerchick · 02/02/2019 22:11

It's fine. Check down the neck of her clothes instead.

She'll let you know if she's cold.

Rtmhwales · 02/02/2019 22:17

My mum drives me nuts about this, saying DS is freezing when he's adequately dressed for the temperature/bed and everything apart from the hands is warm. Doctor said it's common for hands and feet and noses to be cold, as long as the trunk is warm Smile

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 22:21

Gloves?

Gooseygoosey12345 · 02/02/2019 22:46

It's normal Smile dd and I always have freezing hands, DH and DS's hands are always toasty.

spugzbunny · 02/02/2019 22:46

Totally normal! My baby girl is the same.

Just as an FYI - babies should not sleep in gloves. Research has shown that the ability to suck on their hands is a SIDS preventer.

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 23:59

I didn't mean gloves in bed. Sorry I should have specified. I wondered why the baby didn't have gloves to warm the cold hands in the day time.

Lipsticktraces · 03/02/2019 00:09

@spugzbunny is that right? Argh, I’ve been folding my twins scratch mits over to keep their hands warm at night

Reccy2018 · 03/02/2019 06:36

She wears gloves outside. Not inside though as she's using them pretty constantly to chew, pick up stuff, feel, clap, wave, annoyingly poke in my eye and mouth eat with, etc. Do you put gloves on your baby during the day inside?

Renegade, it was almost like your one word answer wasn't enough to adequately explain what you meant. Who knew, eh? 🙄

PenelopeFlintstone · 03/02/2019 06:43

Does the baby have a dummy? If she does, then gloves should be alright at night as sucking on the dummy has the same effect as sucking on the hands, Google just told me.

Dimsumlosesum · 03/02/2019 06:45

As long as nothing else changes in her, ie mottled skin, rapid breathing etc, just obviously keep an eye but its probably just normal part of having little hands outside of warm lothes/duvet x

Reccy2018 · 03/02/2019 07:00

She does have a dummy but she uses her hands to find it and put it back in at night so when I used the scratch mits to cover them up, she got very distressed at not being able to put her dummy back in.

Last night they were chilly but not overly so unless I just felt better about it after reading all your replies

Not ordinarily no, but if I had concerns about the baby having cold hands all day I probably would have used that as a way to warm them up.

Sorry about that.
