Introducing formula at 10 months.... tips?

Hey all!

My daughter has been exclusively breastfed since birth. She is now on 3 breastfeeds a day.

7.30 am
1.30pm ...ish
7.30pm

I am going back to work soon and find expressing missed feeds dissappointing in quantity. I only get 2oz each time (both breasts).

I would therefore like to make the 2nd feed of the day a formula feed so that I can express that 2nd feed to use it as a top up for her last feed and make sure that there is 4-5oz for her final feed. (I'll be working so won't be there for the last feed 😞)

How do I introduce formula? And how much would she need for that feed? At the moment she has 4oz of breastmilk from a bottle for that feed and is quite happy with that.

She's on 3 meals a day and has a good snack range too. She's got a varied diet and all is completely well with her.

She's also at nursery now and food and bottle wise all has been well.

Thanks for tips in advance!

At 10 month old I wouldn't introduce formula. Just give regular milk in the bottle when you aren't there.

Bottles and formula are recommended to stop at 12 months, so for 2 months use it isn't needed. Then would ditch bottle and use beaker with cows milk

I assume she will still be breastfed each morning at home anyway.

I swapped from breastmilk to formula at 6 months and just swapped it. No mixing or anything. I did the same at 11 months when she moved to cows milk, she never seemed bothered.

I have no tips, but wish you luck. Formula doesn't taste very nice so it might be tricky. When I went back with dc1 he fed only in the evenings and mornings so just dropping one feed should help. He just drank water when I wasn't there.

Are you going back to work full time OP?

I went back to work when DD was 10 months, she rejected the expressed milk as she wasn't used to it. We just did the two feeds and water in a cup with meals and snacks.

We introduced formula successfully at 8-9 months (though had trouble with bottles which is another story!). One thing you could do is get her used to the taste of formula by using it in other food - DS has ready brek made with formula for breakfast. He only drank an ounce or so of formula to start but will now drink 3 happily a couple of times in the day as well as by morning evening and in the night.......

I’m going back to work just after mine turns 1, and have introduced a cup of milk during the day, but we just use cow’s milk. There’s no point switching to formula and then again to milk. You should be offering a vitamin supplement anyway so he should get the added nutrients from that. A tiny extra amount of milk at this age won’t make much difference. It only becomes a bit much if he’s drinking like 32oz of it a day.
