Overnight oats?

Hey mum,

This probably sounds daft but do any of you make porridge on a night ready for the morning?
My little one always cry's waiting for her porridge to cook & cool down & I wondered if making it overnight & then just giving it a blast would work?

Do you have a slow cooker?

You could make it overnight in that?

You can make porridge in the microwave. Just put the milk and porridge (and water if you use it) in a microwavable bowl 2 mins and its done

I make a bowl of porridge for family of 4 in 5 mins in microwave in morning. Cook it thick and then thin and cool it down by stirring in cold milk. If I remember I soak oats overnight which seems to make it creamier (soak in water and then add a bit of milk to cook in morning)

Aren't overnight oats when you mix oats with yoghurt and leave overnight? Delicious BTW, you can use any flavour of yoghurt. Great for breakfast on the go.

Yes my daughter does this each night, you mix porridge oats with yoghurt / honey / fruit and leave it in the fridge overnight. It softens the oats ready to eat in the morning

You can use frozen fruit in the overnight oats too.

Hi.

Yes I make her porridge in the microwave but it's letting it cool down that is the problem. She hates to wait for it hahha. She is 14 months though. When she's older I'll be telling her to wait for it. But I just wondered if there anything I could make over night that would just need a few second blast rather then 2 mins. So it's not boiling. I like the over night porridge ideas with frozen fruit. Does this have to be with yogurt or does it work with milk? Xx

I would freeze milk into ice cube trays and add stir a couple into the cooked porridge to cook it quickly.

Milk is fine for over night oats

They can be eaten hot or cold. Google some overnight oat recipies

Put frozen berries in when it a cooked, cooled it right now and they defrost. Raspberries are lovely

I soak oats in water overnight. This softens them up a bit, then they just need a couple of mins on the job in the morning, and I cool them down with cold milk.

Make ready brek or ordinary porridge in the microwave but add less milk. Then it comes out a bit thicker and you can cool and thin it with cold milk from the fridge.

I do this even for my 3 and 6 year olds Smile

By the time we mix in friut (usually a chopped banana), transfer to a cool bowl and pour over a bit of cold milk it is already cool enough to eat.

Can you give her a bit of banana to chomp on while you are waiting

I do overnight oats for 18mth old instead of Porridge for the same reasons you've cited.
6 tablespoons of oats, double the amount of milk, a grated apple and some seeds, chuck it in the fridge and there's enough for a couple of days.
I'll normally add some blueberries in the morning and the whole thing goes down a treat.

Just microwave but add less milk, then add more cold milk after and cools it right down. Or just come down and cook before getting her changed and dressed and then it will have cooled by the time you need it.

Give the overnight oats a go, they are so easy. I find cooling porridge down a pain for my girls as needs to be pretty cold.
I make them with just milk not yoghurt and they are nice. I have given them to my 1 year old before and she seems to like them. Can give cold or warm up a little.

My son has his porridge cold as in never cooked. He gets the little sachets of golden syrup porridge from tesco and just bungs them in a bowl with milk. But then he is a very lazy 11 year old.

Cook your porridge as usual, but serve it in a plate rather than a bowl. The trouble will be keeping it warm!

Keep a bowl in the freezer to serve it in. It will cool down very quickly.

I love overnight oats, they help me have a healthy breakfast ready to eat without too much effort (which is very important with a newborn).
Easiest recipe is just a ratio of 1 to 1 of milk and oats. I sometimes add a spoonful of Greek yoghurt, and a spoonful of chia seeds too, for extra protein.
Then I add dried fruit, cinnamon, and honey, in the morning, and zap it for a minute.

Much healthier than instant oats, and no risk of your instant oats boiling over your bowl and leaving a sticky mess in the microwave!

Ignore all the use frozen milk advice etc. Just do it the night before. Get a jar, put in oats, add milk and leave it. Then give it to her straight out of the fridge in the morning. You can add honey, yoghurt etc if you want too but if she only likes it with mill then just use milk.

I do this for my ds, I just put oats and milk in a bowl, leave in the fridge overnight and heat in the microwave for 1 min in the morning and it's perfect temp!
