Cutting baby nails

Has anyone found any miracle ways of doing this other than when they are asleep? I caught my baby's finger with the baby clippers a few weeks ago when he moved his hand whilst asleep and ever since I've been terrified. Seems impossible to do it whilst awake because of the grip reflex. Am I missing a trick?

Little Baby Bum on Netflix. My DS sits like a statue while it’s on. I can clip nails and peer in ears etc to my hearts content!

Get someone else to do it! (only half joking. Dp cuts ds's nails to this day stemming from my fear of nipping him as a baby. He's five now)

But really in their sleep is definitely the easiest way to do it. And use a firm but gentle grip. Gently pull their finger pad down a little bit, makes it easier to cut them short and not get skin. I found scissors easier than clippers too as more control

I used to bite them myself when they were feeding or sleeping on me. Then use a file if three was a ragged edge.

I used to bite dds, and then when she was older and less wriggly I used the curved baby nail scissors.

KittensAndCake · 30/01/2019 22:43

Yes biting them yourself is the way to go, it's a lot easier and no nasty accidents.

Curved nail scissors here too, still at almost 3 years old I can only do it when he's asleep otherwise I'd have no chance

ShyTallSun · 30/01/2019 22:46

I used to have to make up songs with both DS....random tune with random words because if they recognized the song they would wriggle and probably end up stabbed! The louder and more erratic the better.

CandleConcerto · 30/01/2019 22:46

Since I caught my daughter’s skin, I never do it. They seem to just break off before they get too long.

E20mom · 30/01/2019 22:49

It gets easier but when they are tiny either do it when they are asleep or bite them off.

Figmentofimagination · 30/01/2019 22:55

We tag team it. One of us will have DS sat with us watching something on the tablet, usually Moana as it's his favourite, whilst the other tries to clip the nails. The tablet blocks DS's view of the nail clipping, so he will only try and wriggle his hand/ foot away once in a while. If he could see everything he would be contorting just to get me to let go.

Emery board once asleep!

I used clippers when he was tiny and caught the skin. I felt terrible.

Recently caught my own skin and it bloody hurt.

I used a nail filer machine, made her giggle. I think it tickles a bit. Got it off amazon, aouns £13 I think? Lifesaver

whendidimakethisbottle · 30/01/2019 23:08

I have this thing that goes over your thumb that a little emery board sticks onto and it means you have more fingers free to hold their hand in place. It's called a Thumble. The reviews for it are very mixed but I do like it. Worth a shot

FedUpEffedOff · 31/01/2019 08:24

Wow, thanks all. Glad I'm not alone in the fear. I've only used clippers (danger!) and baby emery board (nails are too weak for this to be much use). I will try the baby scissors, I had been more scared of than but I see the point about more control....

Tried Thumble but same problem re emery board.
