9 day old baby hasn't had a bowel movement for 24 hours

My 9 day old DS hasn't had a dirty nappy for 24 hours. He is still producing wet nappies, before this he was doing 3-4 dirty nappies every 24 hours. He seems OK in himself, is this cause for concern? He's formula fed.

Contact your midwife. Don't ask for medical advice on here. My brother has another bowel issues and had to have surgeries when he was a baby. Some babies don't go daily but if it's not normal for yours then ring and get him checked.

It can be normal but do check with your midwife for advice and her recommendation for when to get it looked at further. My baby did the same and we ended up having to deal with a huge poonami at 3am. It just kept on coming Shock!

Speak to your health visitor or midwife tomorrow but, really, don't worry!

If you are feeling anxious then definitely get it checked out. But to give you some context, my breast fed baby once went ten days without a poo and regularly went a few days at this stage. I found it stressful as she was clearly uncomfortable and had bad trapped wind, but the gp was not remotely concerned! They gave us a laxative to give her to try and get her a bit more regular and it did eventually settle down!

Of course, talk to your midwife, but from personal experience, I would say that sounds fine. Neither of mine pooed more often than about every 3-6 days until they started solids at 6 months. With my youngest, the midwives got a bit twitchy after 3 days at that age and wanted me to start expressing and then offering expressed milk so I’d ‘be sure he was eating enough.’ Ridiculous really. He was eating plenty. He only lost 6% of birth weight and was back to birth weight after 6 days, gaining great, was happy and content. I ignored and carried on doing what I was doing. It just turns out some babies don’t poo much.

So I think that sounds fine. Keep doing what you’re doing.
