Baby bedding shopping

Boring thread alert!
Baby due in June, got a next2me crib in the sales. Have bought grosnugs so not worried about upper bedding (unless these don't suit!). Just wondering what and how much of the 'underbedding' to buy so that any poo/sick mishaps aren't the end of the world!
Is it worth getting a spare actual mattress?
I'm looking at the little green sheep mattress protector which works by being absorbent so I guess two of those will be sensible?
How many crib sheets will I need to preserve my sanity? I know it depends on baby as well but assuming average to quite leaky.
I've read about layering with muslins as extra absorbance too but then worry about having too much going on in the crib (SIDS etc)

I had a snuzpod and found that a pillow case was quite a good alternative to an expensive annoyingly sized sheet.

None of my three's nappies ever leaked at night fortunately so I'd say just one mattress protector would be ok (cos you'll have a sheet on top, obvs). You could always use a muslin or two between the mattress protector and a fitted sheet, but I always thought the texture of a muslin square was a bit too much for precious baby to sleep on! (Princess and the pea style!)

We didn't have any accidents at all so I would suggest just buy a pack of two or three and see how you go. I ended up giving away an unopened pack of undersheets as I never used them. We do have a dryer though so could wash and dry very quickly.

Fantastic, thank you both. I guess extra supplies are only ever an Amazon/send DP to the shop away anyway. Just getting 'the fear' about getting prepared now I'm half way I think Smile

With the little green sheep stuff I'd say no need for a spare mattress- the protectors are excellent. Didn't see anything ended up on the mattress! I had 3 and only ever needed 2. Not a leaky baby but a sicky baby...
Ended up with far too many sheets because they came in packs of 2 - wanted 3 (one on, one in wash, one drying).
The chicco sheets are expensive- john lewis and mothercare (and elsewhere no doubt) do cheaper in the right size. In packs of 2.
I also sometimes had a muslin under baby's head- tucked in tight right across width of cot so it couldn't come loose.

We’ve got two sheets... one on, one in the wash. Not had any problems so far.

We’ve never had any leaky Kapoor’s in the cot til now, DS is 8 months. However, last Saturday he managed to puke three times in the night and we therefore got through a LOT of bedding!

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 25/01/2019 21:18

Not sure we’ve had Kapoor’s of any sort in our cot, neither leaky nappies!

We had the Little Green Sheep protectors, they were great and we only needed two. No leaks ever made it through.

I had a Moses basket and ended up with 6-8 sheets as DD had a lovely habit of posseting several times a night so I could easily go through 4 in a night. I always heard it and got changed it before it went through to the mattress though.

Heyha · 25/01/2019 21:39

See there's the next question, in theory any sleeps not in the crib will be in the carrycot from the travel system (heard too many grumbles about Moses baskets) so I guess I'll need a set of bedding for that too!

I used folded muslins underneath the sheets by the head to protect the mattress from posset. Never had any issues with leaky nappies.

I think I had two sheets, one off and one in the wash. We still use them years later as paddling pool towels. Pack into my handbag and dry quickly in the sun ( remenrrvthat)
