British expats relocate from Dubai to London

Hi everyone, we are a British expat family from Dubai looking into moving back to London in summer 2020.

After some research, hubby and I both decide to live in Muswell Hill area.

My son will be 7+ year 3 for 2020 Sept and he will be a in year transfer which the council said all depends on the vacancies when the time is nearby. My daughter will be 4+ reception in 2020 Sept which I assume should be easier to get a place in the state school.

I know the state primary schools in MH are generally quite good but year 3 (7+) as a in year transfer just makes me panic. I feel it's totally like a gambling for me to buy the property within the catchment area of the school I like. Therefore, I also register him for highgate 7+ admission / norfolk house year 3 and my daughter for norfolk house reception 2020 and channing 4+ as a backup plan.

Is there any independent school for my son 7+ 2020 year 3 that I can register near MH or a bit further out? The logistic wise is another topic after some schools accept them.

BTW, where are the kids go to 11+ for the secondary or grammar school in MH? as I don't really want to move again when the kids are 11+ just to be in another catchment area for secondary school. Maybe I am bit too greedy to sort out both schools for the moment.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated!

If you are moving in Summer 2020 you will struggle to get a reception place for September 2020. Admissions will close in January 2020, and you have to be living in the address you apply from at that point. So you can't speculatively apply saying you will live in the area by the time she starts.

Sorry about the confusion. We are looking into buy a house this summer and register my daughter for reception at this September for 2020 September. But for my older son the council said can only see when the time is closer to register see which state school has place! In year transfer is always a bit tricky!

That’s why I would like ask about other than Highgate and Norfolk house, any other independent schools can be the backup plan. No too far from Muswell Hill though.

You need to check with the council whether owning a house, rather than living there, is sufficient to use that address to apply for your dd. Applications for Reception will close mid January 2020.
