I've been prescribed some by gp to help my DD's terrible sleeping issues but just a bit worried about giving her it.

We've used Phenergan for sleep !! It just an anti histamine !!

Jens303 · 22/01/2019 16:38

little blue pills?

was on them as a child for hayfever

allthatmalarkey · 22/01/2019 16:42

It was the Calpol of the 70s. That's a bit unfair to Calpol as it's just paracetamol. Obviously withdrawn from OTC as parents were using it inappropriately, e.g. kids a bit off colour: give them phenergan. Tasted gorgeous.

my DS3 uses it for travel sickness really works doesnt make him too sleepy either. If you are worried just give half dose thats what I did at first as like you was concerned about it.

Tinks15 · 22/01/2019 16:45

icebear - did it help you? How long did you use it for? I'm really nervous about giving it to her, how you wean off it etc

Its liquid form Jens303, apparently can be used for a number of things.

We use it for car sickness too. I think it’s a lower dose and does not make my child sleepy. It’s been amazing in stopping the car sickness. No other issues. We’ve used it since 22 months.

gingerchick · 22/01/2019 16:48

Be careful I was prescribed piriton another anti histamine by the gp whilst I waited for a paed appointment for my daughter, my daughter has adhd and autism and it made her behaviour much much worse

scaredofthecity · 22/01/2019 16:49

My mum used to give it to us after swimming so that we'd sleep well Hmm

It didn't do us any harm!

I'm surprised they've given it to you, I thought melonin was the preferred drug now. It's what I was offered when my DS was an awful sleeper.

gingerchick · 22/01/2019 16:53

scaredofthecity gps can’t prescribe melatonin only paeds

icannotremember · 22/01/2019 16:55

GP prescribed it for my brother in the mid 80s (my brother didn't sleep through until he was 3 and my mum was at the point of collapse).

It's quite widely used off-label in inpatient camhs settings to help yp manage anxiety and when they are experiencing agitation that's becoming problematic behaviour. I've known quite a few to request it.

I've used it for sleep a fair few times. It's quite effective as OTC meds go and I have not had any worse side effects than still being a bit sleepy the next morning if I've taken it too late at night. And it does wonders for travel sickness.

Tinks15 · 22/01/2019 16:59

He's told us to go back in 3-4 weeks if it hasnt helped, i dont know what the next step is Confused She starts school in September & i'm worried how she she will cope i need to get her sleep sorted before then. She looks so drained everyday where she is clearly not getting enough sleep & me & my partner are just walking zombies. Good job DD2 sleeps well (at the moment).

I had it as a child in the 70s for hayfever. Don't remember being particularly sleepy.
I was also given it for 'morning' sickness when Pg and it turned me into a zombie.
I can't see any harm in giving it a go.

aquietlifeplease · 22/01/2019 17:15

My daughter had it a few years ago when she was suffering badly with night terrors, we just used it as and when for a few months and she was a lot happier. Don't think there were any downsides to using. Nothing is as miserable as a child that doesn't sleep so I really hope it helps.

IceBearRocks · 22/01/2019 18:20

We used it with melatonin as that didn't work on its own. No side effects and not very effective for us ...it is a first line drug for sleep!

Make sure they get plenty of fluids !!!
Good luck !

Tinks15 · 22/01/2019 18:54

Sorry just seen this. Yes it can be given with Calpol.

typoqueen · 23/01/2019 12:02

We were prescribed this for my son for sleep issues, we were informed to give it to him 3 x a day for only 3 days, then 3 days off and 3 days on again, it did help, it enabled me to get him back into a routine, but if concerned speak to the doctor, nurse or health visitor x

Tinks15 · 23/01/2019 12:26

Thanks typoqueen The doc told us to give 5ml before bed, if that doesn't work then increase to 10ml.
He never said about having a break from it though like you did after three days.
