What to put in a hamper for a new baby?

Chocolateheaven123 · 16/01/2019 19:35

My brother and SIL are expecting their first baby soon. They have all the bigger items, so I want to put together a gift box/hamper type of things to give to the baby.

All I can think of to put in it currently is some nice cotton Muslin cloths (theyve been a life line for me) and a soft toy. I have a 22 month old and another baby on the way myself so you'd think I'd be full of ideas but nope! Grin

I'm also getting the baby an outfit when it's born and a personalised blanket.

Would you put in stuff like Bonjela as well? Practical stuff that will get used really, as well as some 'nicer' bits?

Thanks!

One of those towels with a hood on.

AhhhHereItGoes · 16/01/2019 19:45

Waterwipes
Little grippy toy baby can wrap it's fist around during changing
Sudocreme

OurChristmasMiracle · 16/01/2019 19:47

One of them blanket comforters. Photo album. Imprint kit. The cards that say 1 week/2/3/4weeks and go into months etc?

A baby blanket. Rattle or small toy.

Matchstick monkey
Lamaze toy
Calpol
Nipple cream (if planning to breastfeed)
Teething granules
Baby aveeno wash and moisturiser
Dribble bibs
Chocolate!

moleeye · 16/01/2019 20:18

Gripe water
Infacol
Baby massage oil
Travel flask for mum (don't think I had a hot cup of tea for 6 months! Preg with #2 and I've bought myself one!!)
Dummies

GreenTulips · 16/01/2019 20:20

As above plus socks, tissues, if going to the hospital add squash mints and a magazine

meow1989 · 16/01/2019 20:26

Some nice weaning bits always goes down well - bowl, some spoons and a free flow beaker. I made one with essentials for my friend so also had some infant paracetamol, a little duck to see if water is too hot and some infacol. Some teething toys that go in the fridge... bits that you might need but have forgotten.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 16/01/2019 20:32

Yes to Bonjela especially as I think it’s away to go pharmacy only and by request! Stock up!

Apart from that I’ve done something similar of late and I added

3-6 month bodysuits (in case of giant baby)
Bonjela
Infacol
Ear themometer (£10 in Aldi)
Rubbery teether
Grobag (1 tog for when baby hits 6 months old)

Beware of getting 0-3month cute outfits: we were inundated with DD and she wore hardly any of them as she was quite a poopy baby and we felt most confident keeping her in sleepsuits and vests.

concernedforthefuture · 16/01/2019 20:37

I'd avoid teething products / colic remedies / bum cream as there's lots of choice and it can be quite a personal choice. Plus there's the fact that it might not be needed at all. Calpol is a pretty dead cert that it will get used though so maybe add a bottle of that - could be a godsend in the middle of the night at some point.
Giant muslins are good (used mine as a swaddle, changing mat, emergency cot sheet, pram shade, playmat etc)

edwardcullensotherwoman · 16/01/2019 20:38

Nappies and wipes!
A blanket, maybe some sleep suits, infacol as a pp said (I remember DD1 suddenly having colic one night and DH hunting shops in a 20 mile radius for anything that would help!)
Nappy cream, baby wash and maybe a little hooded towel.
My auntie gave me a big bag of stuff when I had each of mine, nothing fancy in them, just essentials that would be guaranteed to get used.

Stickmanslittleleaf · 16/01/2019 20:39

Infacol, Calpol, snot sucker thing from Boots with the bulb. Maybe some snufflebabe (?) baby vick's stuff. Not cute things but things I didn't know I needed until I needed them and had them to hand! If you're willing to spend a few quid and they don't have one an ear thermometer. Maybe a really soft squashy cushion (I used one to prop my silent refluxy baby up while she was napping on the sofa next to me).

Sh00tingstar · 16/01/2019 20:39

All the things you need in the middle of the night. I usually do things like:
Multi mam compresses
Metanium
Nasal spray for colds etc
A nice bib, I got some lil Cubs ones in the sale
A jar of coconut oil to use on the baby
Nice hand cream for mum as you constantly wash your hands
A classic board baby book
Comforter, although I was given several too

user1486250399 · 16/01/2019 20:44

If you go for baby and new mum:

Lavender oil
Tea tree oil (in bath for stitches)
Infacol
Swaddle cloths
Lanolin nipple cream
Dummies
Nice biscuits
Nice baby massage oil
Sudocrem
E45 (for cradle cap)
Nappies
Wipes

user1486250399 · 16/01/2019 20:47

Baby sleeping bag

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 16/01/2019 20:52

If you’re doing it for the parents as well then

CHOCOLATE!

2childrenandout · 16/01/2019 21:03

Best present I received was a brand new changing bag packed with everything I needed. Nappies, wipes, vests, baby gro, bibs, toys...etc. was great as I hadn't even thought about it.

springchicken123 · 16/01/2019 21:09

This works baby sleep spray
Nasal aspirator

Atalune · 16/01/2019 21:14

Bottle of gin

Chocolates

Chamomile tea

Johnson’s and Johnson’s breast pads
Lanolin

Pocket sized hand gel

MumUnderTheMoon · 16/01/2019 23:05

One of my mums friends gave me a boots gift card when my dd was born I thought it was inspired.

GreenTulips · 16/01/2019 23:55

Rather than a basket have you thought about a small tool box type thing for the car?

I had one with all the basics Incase I needed to rush out and didn’t have to pack a bag all the time - we had dummies wipes nappies bags sterile bottles mini pots of bum cream and teething gel teddy socks etc

HearMeSnore · 17/01/2019 00:24

A white noise CD and a bar of Vanish.

Seriously. They were in a goody bag I received when DD was born and were both used every day for nearly a year.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 17/01/2019 00:26

A travel cup.

Jackshouse · 17/01/2019 13:48

A lot of these things are quite personal and I would assume the parents would already have. Just go for a cute baby gift and if you can stretch to it some just cook vouchersz

Wallsbangers · 17/01/2019 14:03

Gift vouchers. Honestly the best present. You get given loads of bloody blankets (you use the two nicest and ignore the rest) and outfits but no one ever buys vests or sleeping bags or dummies or sleepsuit bigger than 0-3 months. Gift vouchers.
