Biting while nursing - HELP!

DS is nearing 8 months old. He's recently had two bottom teeth come through, and along with that has come a painful bite! He's done it three times now, which doesn't sound like much, however my nipple is really sore now and it's putting me off breastfeeding tbh. The second and third time he's done it, I yelled "no!" at him hoping it would put him off biting but he just found it funny.Hmm
So I've two questions.

  1. can I use lansinoh to help my boob to recover?
  2. what can I do to stop him biting? Any advice would be appreciated!

I yell loudly and he cries. He’s learned to associate biting with an unpleasant reaction from me so he doesn’t do it much now.

I just decided that when teeth came I would stop BF.

Not helpful I know, but I stopped when DC2 was 8 months for this very reason.

You can use lansinoh I think. No advice on how to stop the biting though, sorry.

  1. Yes lansinoh is safe to use and can be swallowed by baby (it's uncommon but some babies/ppl are allergic to lanolin so be vigilant for any signs just in case)
  2. Some infants are not deterred by the loud shrieks from mum and actually find it encouraging to try and make mum make the loud squeal again (yes youngest of mine I'm looking at you!). Only thing i found workes was to persistently put boob away and let baby get all fussy then try feeding again. They learnt biting meant milk disappeared but sadly in their case it was a stage to get through. My elder biter responded well to me yelping but not this one!

Older babies tend to demand significant attention and may bite if they don't feel they're getting enough. Try to keep eye contact and engage with your baby while breastfeeding. In order to actively nurse, the baby's tongue must be placed over the lower teeth and gums to draw milk out of the breast.26 Jun 2018

I don't have a perfect answer I'm afraid but what I tended to do was unlatcth, place ds on the floor and firmly say no biting. i would then leave it 20 secs or so and restart but stop again for longer if he continued. although on one or two occasions when he drew quite a bit of blood i did scream and cry. it was slow bit did eventually work.
what I did notice is that biting seemed to come in phases when he was teething and then would settle down again. so making sure he had pain relieve and other things to chew on too also helped and on the really bad days I swapped to expressing and bottle feeding instead. he is 16 months now and I'm still feeding and he is still teething but we have very few bites now in fact it has been quite some time since the last nipple bite so hopefully that's it.
good luck.

with regards to healing. try and get air to it as much as possible and use lanisoh if needed too when putting clothes back on.

My 6 month old DS is a biter and it’s so painful, I have cried and he just laughs.

I have been using my little finger to unlatch him whenever it happens and saying no firmly. Same as the poster above I find it’s not a constant thing.

I use the Welleda nipple cream to help them heal.
