Blood in baby poop?!

ArlyBaby · 15/01/2019 16:50

My nearly 5 month old DD has had a few bloody poops lately. I've googled and I doubt it's blood due to anal fissure from straining since she only does liquid poops still as she's not on solid food yet. So what else could it be?! I have ulcerative colitis so I'm scared she could have something like that! Or could it be a cows milk allergy? She has formula in the day and breast at night.

A 5 months old with blood in their poo?

I know that you’re seeking advice but in this instance I’m going to be harsh and say don’t be a bloody fool, stop asking strangers for advice and take your baby to the GP

Jackshouse · 15/01/2019 17:05

It could be a number of things including allergy. I’m really hoping you have already sought medical advice.

Hospital hospital hospital.

Is it bright red (fresh) blood or is it dark (black) old blood

Fish a dirty nappy out of the bin and off to A&E to check Flowers

MrsG010814 · 15/01/2019 17:27

What do you mean by lately? How long has it been going on? Agree with pp's with a baby so young you need to seek urgent medical attention.

abbsisspartacus · 15/01/2019 17:29

Weaned or unweaned? I.e. could it be tomatoes?

But yes in this case a Dr is your best bet

HavelockVetinari · 15/01/2019 17:32

Definitely call 111 to ask for advice. Does she seem in pain, is she still having plenty of milk and wet and dirty nappies? Any change in behaviour?

If you're bf, how are your boobs? Any mastitis or nipple pain?

stuckbetweenlife · 15/01/2019 17:34

Has she got nappy rash? My lo did a sore wet poo and there was bloody and once I wipe I noticed nappy rash, it wasn't there an hour before.
But definitely call 111 or just go to the a&e because the lo is under a year

HopeGarden · 15/01/2019 17:36

It’s definitely best to seek urgent medical advice.

ArlyBaby · 15/01/2019 17:42

Don't worry all first call was GP - should have mentioned that! She's going in tomorrow.
That's why it's so strange - she's absolutely fine in herself! Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience and what the outcome was after investigation so I can prepare myself!

Also - no nappy rash. She's unweaned. She's breast and formula fed - I introduced formula about a month ago. Nipples fine no blood there.

It could still be anal fissures - they're sometimes internal so hard to see. An alternative is allergies, but you'd likely have seen some abdominal discomfort with that. Hmm. Let us know what your GP says.

My DD had blood in her dirty nappies and it was diagnosed as CMPA. Is there mucus as well?

QuilliamCakespeare · 15/01/2019 21:10

DS2 once threw up red tinted sick and did a horrible, black poo the next day so I took him straight to the GP. GP wasn't concerned at all but, having seen pink vomit, I KNEW it was blood. However, it never happened again and I was suffering with blebs at the time so am pretty sure it was a blood from my poorly boob.

Definitely see your GP if you're concerned. I believe black poos indicate digested blood and red, fresh blood is more likely to be from the intestinal tract/anus (based on my limited reading on the subject at the time).

ArlyBaby · 15/01/2019 21:39

I'm wondering if it's CMPA...
yes I think there could be a bit of mucus in the nappy too, hard to tell tho! Will see what the doc says tomorrow. For now she's fast asleep and I'll try not to spend all night worrying! Confused

My 8 week old filled two nappies with blood... turned out to be cows milk protein allergy. Perhaps if it's a small amount, she has a slight intolerance?

JKCR2017 · 15/01/2019 21:53

DD used to get this but she also suffered from constipation. When I took her to the doctors they said it was fissures from straining and hard stools.

I’d definitely take her to see a doctor though! It will put your mind at ease at least.

confuddeledconfuddel · 16/01/2019 00:23

How was your appt @ArlyBaby. I hope it went well Thanks

dottybutterfly · 16/01/2019 07:32

Hope your lo is okay, when I thought my lo had blood in her poo I called 111 and the wanted to send an ambulance straight away!! Turns out she'd eaten something to make her poo like that, don't want to worry you but that was my experience xx

ArlyBaby · 16/01/2019 12:37

Well the GP said he may have seen a small tear that may have caused the bleeding but wasn't sure so he said keep an eye on it. Not very reassured!
Strange that some have had such an urgent reaction to a similar situation and my doc doesn't seem overly concerned! He didn't even take her temperature?!

OP posts:
confuddeledconfuddel · 16/01/2019 13:28

I think your dr has the sensible approach. I have had my LG at dr with blood in her poo but I know it was a tear and they didn't check temp or anything.
If your not happy though, get a second opinion! Is colour of poop and everything else normal?

mittensuck · 16/01/2019 21:03

it is just ketchup

seven201 · 16/01/2019 21:53

Of guess little tear or cmpa.

My dd has cmpa with screaming plain.
My friend's ds's only symptom of cmpa is blood in poo.

If you're not happy go back to the doctor.
