Teenage Girl Shopping

Hi everyone. I was looking for a little advice please on how to handle this one.
My 13 year old daughter went shopping with her friend at the weekend. She decided to ask about foundation, at the Chanel counter in Debenhams no less, and was persuaded by the beautician to purchase a £46 foundation! The most I would personally pay for a foundation by the way is £10, so this obviously took a huge chunk out of her Christmas money.
My issues with the beautician are: 1. My daughter had not been told the price until the sale had got to the till stage, and 2. She won't be able to wear the product anyway due to dry skin.
Do I have any grounds to complain to Debenhams or should I just tell my daughter she has learnt a very expensive lesson?

I'd be sending in a complaint by email but I wouldn't be very hopeful of a positive response.

You could definitely complain but your daughter approached the sales assistant for help with a foundation. I am sure if the lady refused to serve her on the basis she looked like she couldn’t afford it, then I’m sure both your daughter and the Chanel manager would be up in arms.

I would say the fault lies completely with your daughter on this one, if she is old enough to be out and about shopping without adult supervision she is old enough to ask how much the foundation is.

If it is unopened and she has the receipt she could try return it

If it’s not suitable for her skin she can return it even if used.

Unopened she can return it. Easy.

The woman was just doing her job. This is a lesson for your daughter. I've done the exact same thing when I was 16. Began working and spent my first check of £250 on a cream!!! A fucking night cream set that include 4 things. Although I may say it made my skin lovely but wtf was I thinking. I learned my lesson and was more carefully

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/01/2019 13:48

Definitely doesn’t matter if it’s opened or not you can still return.

Thank you everyone. As I suspected an expensive lesson not to be repeated, particularly as she now has spots to boot as a result of using the product! She isn't an experienced shopper, my fault really for wrapping her up in cotton wool I suppose. Her friend's mother very patiently supervised the girls between shops and waited outside of each shop whilst the girls browsed "independently"!
