What to expect from first jabs?

Dd has her first set of newborn jabs this week, what should we expect? Will her sleep and mood be wrecked? Will she be quite ill after? She’s the most Gilles girl ever, reckon I might cry more than her Blush

Get some calpol in-she will probably have a temperature but will forget about it quicker than you will I'm sure!

CountessVonBoobs · 13/01/2019 15:39

She's quite likely to be crabby and feverish for 24 hours or so. She may also sleep a lot. Calpol will sort the temperature out.

HopeAndJoy16 · 13/01/2019 15:43

The first lot of jabs were definitely the worst for my DD. She was fine having the actual jabs but it made her really out of sorts. It put her off feeding, and she cried solidly for a good few hours. Ended up with both of us in tears! Skin to skin worked a treat though and calpol.
If it's any consolation, none of my friends babies seemed to be as affected! Also the other jabs, even the third set which i think can also nake them feel poorly, have had very little effect on her.

I wish I'd been more prepared for how upset my dd would be afterwards, which is why I'm telling you i guess! Hope it all goes smoothly for you both

Mine was absolutely fine having them. She then spent almost the whole day just wanting to feed and sleep and then slept for 6 hours that night, a feat she has only repeated once since!

She was a bit out of sorts for the next couple of days but we think that was the rotovirus vaccine irritating her rather delicate digestive system.

rubyroot · 13/01/2019 16:14

It was fine really it was. Mine had watery pooh and a bit sicky which went pretty quick, think this was from the rotavirus drops, some friends babies had this, others didn't. Not particularly any more crabby than your usual crabby day to be honest.

FartnissEverbeans · 13/01/2019 16:28

My son had absolutely no issues with his jabs. I was looking out for fever, crabbiness etc. but there was nothing. He was a bit sleepy afterwards, which I think was just due to the shock of the whole thing!

Cardiffclare88 · 13/01/2019 16:29

Thank you all, have got the calpol. Do you give it after or before the jabs? When we booked the appointment receptionist said GP will check her over first to make sure it’s safe to start the course.

OP should say chilled girl not Gilles!

My DS had his first jabs last week. The nurse told us to give calpol before them so he had calpol and about 15 mins later had vaccinations. He cried through them but then calpol kicked in and he slept a lot that day.

In the evening/night he had temperature. So I gave him more calpol and he was back to his usual self the next day

honorariam · 13/01/2019 17:13

We ended up in A&E with DS after first jabs and an insanely high temp of 39, after calpol.

Didn't happen after 12 week jabs though and we split 16 week ones so that was fine too.

MaverickSnoopy · 13/01/2019 17:20

DD1 - fine having them and didn't cry and no impact from jabs at all. Also didn't advise calpol back then.

DD2 - a bit fussy having them and cried a bit. Went off her food and slept a lot for about 2 weeks. Gave calpol after as advised.

DD3 - cried a river of tears and was inconsolable for about 20 mins. Wouldn't even take milk to calm down. No adverse effects apart from ever so slightly raised temperature. Calpol after as advised. Interestingly same health visitor said to my friend to give her son the calpol before - he is 2 weeks younger.

All babies react differently and whatever happens it does pass.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/01/2019 17:21

A few tears, some calpol and my best nights sleep for a while.

Cardiffclare88 · 13/01/2019 18:44

Sleep sounds delightful, hopefully my tears will have subsided by evening Confused

Honestly the first 3 sets of jabs were fine for my DS but his 1 year jabs were scary because he wouldn't move his legs for a couple of days and I was terrified! But he was ok and your DD will be too. Just give her calpol as instructed and she'll be fine.

Cardiffclare88 · 13/01/2019 19:47

@LordPickle Shock that’s very frightening! Did you find out why that happened? Or is it very common?

OP posts:
LordPickle · 13/01/2019 20:04

@Cardiffclare88 apparently it can affect some babies like that (all jabs are in their legs) and I noticed it more because he had been crawling and suddenly wouldn't move his legs at all. No one I know had heard of that happening but my GP was unconcerned and he was fine after a couple of days. It was very scary though.

CJ1990 · 13/01/2019 21:09

Sling if you have one! I have the least clingiest baby I know but she turned into a limpet! At least for a day or two. Didn’t have one for the 8 week jabs but wish I had as it saved me for the 16 week ones! 12 week ones barely bothered her at all but the meningitis ones are brutal. My daughter didn’t react great to those. But all back to normal in a day or so normally. Just a crap night and day or two x

CJ1990 · 13/01/2019 21:11

Wierdly the 8 week jabs I also had a great nights sleep! Nocked her right out. 12 week ones sleep was as normal. 16 week jabs I couldn’t put her down 😳slept on me all night...! But again all over in a day or two 😊

user1493413286 · 13/01/2019 21:15

After the first ones my DD just slept a lot of the day and night then was back to normal the next day. She was more clingy and unsettled after the second lot
