What do you do when you are ill?

DD is under 1 year old and I’m full of a knock out cold. Possibly chest infection...

She is crawling and pulling herself up on everything so I have been fencing her in with toys so I can have a break for a bit!

Still feel rubbish ( and guilty!) and playing with her for even five minutes I’m finding exhausting, has anyone got any tips apart from TV/apps ... she seems to get bored after a little while and I just have no energy whatsoever to entertain her. Happy to do the same again tomorrow as I know a couple of days staying in won’t do any harm, but what do you do when you are ill?

Nothing against TV and apps just to add- she is very happy popping bubbles or watching peppa pig for a bit which is great

Poor you. Do you have anyone who can help you?

Youmadorwhat · 12/01/2019 22:20

Yep I just chill at home and rely on tv and easy games (jigsaws, etc) although I do does myself with meds and go for a walk or pop to the park if I can just to get fresh air!! Always feel better for it too!!

I have no idea but very interested in other people's ideas. I have been thinking the same as my DD is 8 months and needs constant entertaining. At the moment a packet of wet wipes and some string are her fav things to play with......forget all the toys I got her for Xmas Hmm one thing I saw on Instagram was put ur kid inside a cardboard box with some crayons and let them draw all over it. Would that keep your buba entertained? Maybe make them a blanket den to play in while u have a lay on the sofa? Look on Instagram for ideas.....that's what I always check out xxx good luck and hope you feel better soon xx

Travel cot or playpen? Sit them in with a few toys while you supervise from sofa?

PossibiliTea · 12/01/2019 22:42

I tried going to the park dosed up but got really woozy and sweaty so worried a bit in case I couldn’t drive home! I’m soft!

Good idea about the travel cot I’ll dig it out and change up the toys. Mealtimes are ok I usually manage a verse or two of old McDonald so that breaks up the day I guess.

Love the cardboard box idea, she will probably give the crayons a good chew but I’ll give it a go!

I don’t have anyone to help just at the moment but hopefully I will feel better soon and get back to normal.

Any more ideas very welcome as they will always come in!

@TwinkleMerrick it’s always the way isn’t it! I’ve put a few random things together for her today including Tupperware and a spatula Grin

Ceebies. Picnics on the floor. Beecham cold and flu tablets for you. Nap when they nap.

TwittleBee · 13/01/2019 07:25

I'm so sorry you're going through this, hope you get better soon.

DH and I got the Flu over Xmas break, caught it from DS. We had no choice but to lay on the lounge floor whilst he played around us. We might have had the occasional strength to move a car with one hand so it looked like we were joining in with his games.

As for food, he survived on snacks. Luckily we always have a lot of fresh fruit and veg in the house so he had hummus and veg sticks a lot.

Bath. Bit of warm water, bubble bath, colander/ cups/ etc.
Bean bag in corner of bathroom do you can supervise.

bonzo77 · 13/01/2019 07:28

Dose up. Use the digital baby sitter and Mac Donald’s drive through. Get the fuck on with it. Only time I got any help was when I ended up in hospital.

TwinkleMerrick · 13/01/2019 08:09

Oh another random task my DD loves, my friend brought a box round of baby clothes for her. She spent about an hour pulling them out of the box and inspecting them. So put random objects in a box for her to pull out and inspect...I'm thinking different textures, socks, bibs, closed crisp packet, sunglasses, stuff like that Wink

When I was ill once, I was lying in bed, DD, probably aged around 3, was wandering around the bedroom, investigating and playing with whatever she found.

At one point she disappeared for about an hour but I literally couldn't get up to go get her. When I did manage to get up I found that she had managed to find a packet of sanitary towels in the bedroom, had opened it and opened all the individual sanitary towels inside, peeled off the backing strip and stuck the towels at various random places on the walls throughout the whole house! I was still finding them stuck to the walls days later, including after I'd had people round, in places where visitors would definitely have spotted them!

mustdrinkwaternotwine · 13/01/2019 09:21

It's so tough as this age as they can't entertain themselves for long and the TV isn't that appealing.
One thing I did was effectively treat them like a dog and play fetch with them. Roll a ball away from you (can easily be done whilst lying on the sofa) and get her to bring it back to you. If you don't have a ball, improvise - a pair of socks or something would do.
Otherwise, don't be afraid to call on people & ask for a favour in helping out. It's horrible having to ask but most people are happy to help.
I hope you get better soon.

PossibiliTea · 13/01/2019 13:40

Thank you so much for all your suggestions!

@bonzo77 I certainly have been getting the fuck on with it haha as I have no choice!

Everyone’s advice has helped so much honestly, I feel horrific today but the brilliant thing is she’s immensely entertained by me blowing my nose and is copying me coughing Grin

DC are older now but my meory is that I just sat on the sofa wrappe din duvets switching between way too much TV - back to back favourite cartoons - and tossing toys at the, Food was the absolute basic.

It's hard but you get through it.
