Help in a bit of a panic made up my 6 week LO her anti reflux milk and left it to cool down in jug of water took bottle out and saw it had more in there thought it was just the froth as it's anti reflux feed went from 4oz to just over 5oz started feeding her and realised the milk was a lot thinner then realised the MAM bottle took in just over an OZ of tap water. Is she going to get unwell by one having tap water and two by taking a diluted bottle she's only had 3oz as stopped as soon as I realised but currently fee l awful!!

I think the risk is very small, try not to worry!! The dilution will do her no harm at all. The tap water there's a tiny theoretical risk but I don't think it's anything to lose sleep over.

The most important thing is that the bottle is made up with boiling water, as nasty bacteria can lurk in the milk powder. Subsequently adding a bit of cold tap water is neither here nor there.

If your tap water is drinkable I would not worry! I know a mom who only used tap water for her LOs bottles. I mean don’t do that but I’m just saying. What’s the worse that can happen? She’s gets the runs and a tummy ache. I don’t think that will even happen. Don’t worry!

I used tap water several times if bub was crying for milk and I had no cool sterilized water. He's okay, I also used to microwave the bottles to heat them (shock horror!) He's fine, had no ill spells

PossibiliTea · 12/01/2019 22:52

Are you sure it took some in? I use anti reflux and because it thickens along with shaking it, it looks about 1oz more than made up.

I know you have put it was thinner sorry and even if it had tap water in it will be absolutely fine, but I know when I make up 5oz it looks like 6?

Just a thought! Either way your LO will be fine!

babylovexo · 12/01/2019 23:04

She's fine just me being a worrier! Lol read afterwards that the MAM anti colic bottles draw water up through the base if you out it in water so won't be doing that again I blame the sleep deprivation for not using my brain! Haha

@babylovexo really!! I didn’t know that I’ve been doing it for ages!! Bloody hell haha

babylovexo · 12/01/2019 23:10

@PossibiliTea haha I know I felt like a complete wally apparently it works as a auction read that if you take the top off to cool it stops it drawing water in!

If you're in the UK don't worry about the tap water, when you boil the water to make up a bottle you are doing so to ensure any bugs in the formula powder are killed, not to sterilize the tap water.

I know this is an old thread but I’ve had the same problem. I’ve been using mam bottles since baby was born until 10 weeks and only realised now that it takes half an ox of water when cooling in cold water. I’m so worried!!!!! A) because t diluted the formula and b) because it took on tap water.
I had no idea until I read it ip somewhere. What harm could this have caused???

Sosadsolangafter · 06/04/2023 15:41

None, no harm at all.

The only theoretical issue is a dummy she, and as you've blurred, she'd been having it for weeks and has been fine.

In some countries they make it up using water from the tap, in other countries it's bottled water, in sooner countries it's tap water and they don't be sterilise.

It's good to be careful, but they are all precautionary things to reduce further an already small risk.

PossibiliTea · 19/04/2023 20:41

I can say five years and a baby brother later all is more than fine haha!

PossibiliTea · 19/04/2023 20:42

Diluted formula by half an oz will cause no problems and half an oz of tap water will cause no harm. I know mine will drink about half an oz of bath water a day probably 😂

Infertilityishard · 19/04/2023 23:28

thankyou makes me feel better now. It’s just that I had cooled every single feed in a jug of water so all the feeds must have taken water in

You are meant to use nearly boiling water to kill the bacteria in the formula powder. The tap water itself (especially if it's drinkable as it is in most places in the UK) isn't much of a risk. In fact after Ds was 6 months old I used to add tap water to his bottle to get the correct temperature. Even at six weeks I don't think there's much risk and the dilution wouldn't have hurt your baby at all as a one off.

I also used mam bottles and they are a pain to cool down. On their website they say you need to remove the teat and lid when putting the bottle in cold water to.cool it down as this will.prevent the bottle sucking in water.

It's a bit more of a faff but what I did finally was to keep a flask of boiled cooled down water (or later just used tap water). I'd make up the formula with enough boiled water to kill the bacteria in it and then topped it up with old water from the flask. E.g. if I wanted to make 180 ml of milk I'd put six scoops of formula into 90ml of hot water in the bottle, leave it for a minute or so to give it time to.kill the bacteria in the formula and then top it up with cold water from the flask.

(Technically I also used a flask to store the hot water at around 70 degrees rather than boiling but I'm a stickler for rules).

If you do this just.make sure that you measure out the hot water before you add formula to it to make sure that in the end the formula contains the right amount of water, eg 180ml for six scoops.

Anyway, don't worry at all about the tap water. Your little one will be fine.
