Hand pump recommendations

Polestar50 · 11/01/2019 09:14

I have a 7 month old who loves his food. I would like to start pumping small amounts of breast milk to make porridge etc. Also so express for the odd feed to allow me to go out a bit more.

I expressed successfully with a (rented) electric pump when he was younger but think a hand pump is all I need fur the quantities I'm planning now.

I'd really appreciate any advice and recommendations from people who have used hand pumps.
Which are the most comfortable and efficient?
Many thanks!

Bumping, I’m interested too.

The medela harmony is brilliant - used it for over 5 years (2 babies). I have recommended it to lots of friends who also thought it was good.

Philips Avant one. It's easy to use and very easy to clean. Use it almost daily to pump when LO is in bed.

Out of all the pumps I bought my favourite was the haakaa. Most effective if you use of while you're feeding on the other side.

Cardiffclare88 · 12/01/2019 02:44

@pigletpie2177 is the hakaa a proper pump or does it just catch the overflow? Are you able to pour fro it into storage bags?

pigletpie2177 · 12/01/2019 10:12

@Cardiffclare88 it catches letdown but I found it got much more than pumping for me, for far less effort. I could pour it straight into the bags yes, or it has a lid or stopper options so you can store it in the fridge.

Thanks for these really useful replies.

Pigletpie The Hakaa has really good reviews online but I am still not sure how it works.

I very rarely leak any more so am not sure how much I would get from just collecting letdown whilst feeding from the other breast.

Does the design encourage flow without any pumping action (by suction maybe)? Or do you manually pump it a little whilst collecting? Or something else?

@Polestar50 it's a suction thing, you fix it on and it draws out the milk. I would sometimes hand express a little first and the let it get going. I found it at least as effective as handpumps without all the faff.

Ah, many thanks for the reply, that's really helpful.

I liked the hakaa but as my baby got older she could really easily knock it off and so I found the Phillips avent manual a bit sturdier to use - although the pump system also distracts her now! The hakaa is a dream to clean though! But I found I got more milk with the avent pump. The hakaa is so cheap may be worth picking it up first to try it out
