Hi my 7yr dd has come home with letter from brownies re trip to blackpool for one night staying in tower. She has not been away with them before im not sure if she is old enough i think i would feel better if it was a camp but i know it can be very busy in blackpool and we are about 4hrs away so cant get there quickly if anything was wrong.

Are you asking advice? 7 is young. How does she feel?

J73can · 09/01/2019 01:20

She wants to go but i feel its too young and because of location (a busy city) it makes me a bit nervous.

I agree but don't quite understand your post....are you asking for advice, opinions or just sounding off?

Sleepover in Blackpool Tower? Let her go for sure! The Brownies/guides in general have the most irritatingly thorough safeguarding training and procedures so if she was going away with anyone I'd rather it was them. My girls have had lovely brownie sleepovers.

The Brownie leaders will have to do huge amounts of paperwork, risk assessment and research before they arrange this trip. I used to run Cubs and had to go on courses and do ‘supervised’ camps etc before I was ever permitted to organise my own activity. And they will need to have a set number if responsbile adults (all DBS checked) before they can even think about the trip.
Believe me, it’s will be very, very carefully arranged. Having said that, accidents can and do happen, but they could happen at school, at home or on a family holiday. You have to make your own judgement. Or what about volunteering as a Pack Helper?

They won't be out roaming hte town on their own!

I used to help with Brownies, and my DD has been through the whole movement - rainbows to rangers. She has never had anything but positive experiences on all the activities she has been on. It has been fantastic for building her confidence and for making friends.

Let her go - she will have a fantastic time!

Summerlove2306 · 09/01/2019 09:37

I'm a rainbow leader, trust me everything will be planned, assessed and policied to death! Brownie leaders will also be well equipped to deal with if she feels homesick also. If you are feeling nervous, maybe talk to her brownie leader about it? She should be happy to calm your fears.

Seeline · 09/01/2019 09:45

Is it part of a much larger event - county or region? If so, it is likely that the place will literally be taken over by Girlguiding for just their members, with organised activities etc. Such events are brilliant.

Have a chat with the Leader who will be able to give you more information as to exactly what is planned.

Thanks i will speak to leader it is me thats panicking.

When is it? Blackpool is pretty dead a lot of the time...

ShadyLady53 · 09/01/2019 12:30

Blackpool isn’t a busy city. It’s quite a small town with a beach. It’s nothing like London or Manchester for example. As far as I know, school trips go there regularly and there are big events involving children requiring overnight stays like DiscoKid, Cheerleading Championships and the various Dance World Championships. There’s no more risk there than anywhere else. Health and Safety and Blackpool Tower is one of the best in the world.

trevthecat · 09/01/2019 12:38

Blackpool is dead this time of year. 7 does seem young but sleep over in the tower sounds great!

Bombardier25966 · 09/01/2019 12:41

This is an annual event.

Looks great!

Hoppinggreen · 09/01/2019 16:56

I would never let my child go to Blackpool unless they were very carefully supervised. However, at age 7 and with Brownies she WILL be so I wouldn’t have a problem with it

SnowWhite26 · 09/01/2019 20:26

Im a brownie leader there will be emergency contacts taken and if there is a problem on either end it will be sorted and very thought through. You have to go through months of doing a leadership qualification to be a leader and further for taking girls away. It will be real well planned especially if its a big event and she will have a great time! X
