Breast feeding help!

Good evening, inbetween screams I’m trying to type out this post! Sad

My daughter is 5 weeks old and

exclusively B.B. it’s becoming a pattern in the evening that she’s screaming to be fed a lot, but when on the breast she’s screaming like she’s in pain and coming off quickly. I’m then trying to burp in case it’s wind for ages while she screams and stands up, like she’s rigid in pain (she’s very strong) I’ve given her dummy in case she just wants to suck, she sucks that then after a while cries. I try the breast again and it’s the same..

I’m feeling bit tearful as I’ve strained myself (I had c section) foolishly picking up car seat, my dad was struggling as he’s 70 with bad back and he was pushing himself and no one else could help. So the constantly moving and swapping and winding, is hurting me, as I keep having to bend and pick up and twist.

I just wish I knew what problem was...anyway of resolving it because it’s happening nighty now. When I’m at my tiredest. She’s rooting and screaming then comes straight off! Sad

Blimey you are going through a lot! Hope you are managing some rest in between times?

It could be a few things but I would suggest seeing your Heath visitor tomorrow or even gp, not that is likely anything serious just to get it sorted and get some relief.

My LO has really bad wind and screamed, so could be this even though you are winding all you can.

Another thing is could be is tongue tie? Usually checked for but not always posterior. I was back and forth for 16 weeks with problems breastfeeding being made as if i wasn’t trying hard enough onlyto discover posterior tongue tie.

Potentially reflux? She might be hungry but silent reflux causing pain?

Oh you poor thing. This sounds a lot like my DS1, he had silent reflux and it was awful. Exactly 6 minutes in to every feed he screamed blue murder, but was still hungry, so was then screaming to be fed.

A few things helped - feeding little and often, and experimenting with feeding positions to try to keep him upright as much as possible. But because he wasn’t losing weight the HVs and doctor didn’t really care, and wouldn’t give us Gaviscon. In hindsight I wish I’d thrown my weight around a bit more and insisted, they were so blaze about babies being in pain.

He grew out of it totally by 13 weeks. I know that seems impossibly far away from where you are.

Oh and the dummy really helped, especially before feeds. I think the saliva helps to deal with the stomach acid.

Sorry to ramble but with you saying it’s in the evening it could be colic or reflux. Maybe an overactive let down?

Definitely one for your health visitor. Sounds like you are doing an amazing job, being very patient and doing all the right things though

Poppylizzyrose · 06/01/2019 22:31

Thanks! I don’t know much about silent reflux, so I will look into that, she’s never sick if that means anything. I also thought colic so I shall ask about that too. This just goes on until she wears herself out and goes to sleep. Sad just makes the evenings a very upsetting time. I’ve tried gripe water too. It’s also very painful, nipple wise Sad

The standing up thing was knew today, she just looked so ridgid in pain. Just so tense all over. I’m going to find a baby massage class tomorrow too and see if there’s something else I can do for her.

try ‘tiger in a tree’ hold for winding. Vary positions of feeding as P.O. said try a more vertical position. Ensure proper latch incase baby is taking in air.

If you do feel it’s reflux tell the GP you’d like infant gaviscon or ranitidine.
Take care
