My 4 year old recently started swimming lessons, he absolutely loves it not affraid of the water at all, but every time he gets out of the pool I’m constantly worrying asking him if he’s ok I no dry/secondary drowning is very rare and uncommon but I’m petrified everytime he’s in the water is it just me or does anyone else get the same.?

My 5yo DS has been swimming since he was 6 weeks old and it's never really crossed my mind.

I no it’s crazy, I get really nervous/scared every week after his lesson, constantly checking on him and making sure he’s ok...like tonight my heart races and I can’t get my breath...I no it’s just all part of being a parent the worring but I don’t want it to stop them being a child

I have taken my dc swimming at least weekly since they were 6 weeks old. They are now 7 and 10, and it’s never crossed my mind. I am a very confident swimmer myself though.

I’m not the best swimmer I can if I had to I guess, it never bothered me before when I’d take him until I read a silly article about dry drowning just crazy anxiety about the whole thing.

Do you suffer from anxiety in general, OP? It hasn't crossed my mind before either tbh.

purpleme12 · 06/01/2019 22:35

Um I don't think this is part of normal parenting worries. Sounds like anxiety to me

Lazypuppy · 06/01/2019 23:19

Imo that is not normal parent worrying. You need to control it or you're going to pass these fears to your child

WhoIsBU · 06/01/2019 23:29

I also worry about this OP. I don't even know much about it but I remember reading a post on fb about it when DD was tiny and its always stuck in my mind.
I'm not constantly worrying about it but it frequently crosses my mind after swimming.

I understand your concerns and I spoke to a swimming teacher about dry drowning. She was very reassuring and explained what she was looking for when working with children whilst they are in the pool. It might be worth seeing if you can talk to the swimming teacher and seeing if that reassures you.
