How many wet nappies is normal?

Hi,

FTM here. I have googled it but get different answers so I've come here. How many wet nappies should my week old have per day? Is it normal for baby to not poo sometimes? I formula feed her hungrier baby powder and I've recently started doing 3 scoops for 90ml of water instead of 2 for 60ml as she seemed to still be hungry when I did 60 (feed every 2-4 hours as advices by midwife). Anyway she hasn't gone for a poo today and I don't think she's had a wet nappy since last night either. Is this common in newborns? She hasn't got yellow skin so I know it's not jaundice. She does look like she's going for a poo, making noises and goes red but when I check nappy, there's nothing there.

You need to put tissue in her nappy so you can be sure, but if she isn’t weeing she needs to go to hospital.

You can’t change the formula water to powder amounts or the baby will get dehydrated.

Why the hell are you giving hungry baby milk? Give first milk as hungry milk is for older babies and can cause constipation

Just to add, I’ve just seen this is a week old baby, I think you need to take it to hospital.

3 scoops is right for 90 mls but stop giving hungry milk as its unsuitable for newborns

If you are concerned your week old is dehydrated and not weeing you should call your midwife now, or 111.

Ah, I misread it as being 3 scoops for the same water. Sorry.

peachypetite · 05/01/2019 22:34

I don't think you should be messing with the formula to water ratio?

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 22:35

She isn't - it's 1 scoop to 30mls so 3 scoops to 90mls is correct

She should be having several wet nappies a day, so if you have any concerns that she hasn't today then definitely speak to your midwife asap.

When they are very little, you should be able to change a wet nappy roughly every feed (so every 3 ish hours, on average). It may not be very wet, but it should be wet to some degree. I would say I was getting about 8 wet nappies a day, but neither of mine pooed much (only about every 3-5 days). Midwives will tell you that's not often enough, but as long as they are having wet nappies and gaining weight, it's fine.

You shouldn't be using hungry baby milk. It's diet milk. Babies don't need to be on a diet, they need to be growing and getting all the nutrients they need, especially so little.

But no wet nappies in a day is a medical emergency, so I could call your midwife or 111 for advice.
