What age did your toddler drop their nap

I have a boy who's just turned two and suddenly overnight some days I'm struggling to get him to nap.. the days he doesn't he is really cranky and awful around dinner time which is hard.
I know routine got a bit messed about with Xmas and everything but just wondered if he was about to start dropping them but still seems a bit young.. what age did your toddlers stop??

My LG was forced to stop napping when she was 4 as starting school. My lb was just turned 2. The first few weeks were hard but he soon adapted and now only has one if he's poorly, he copes fine the rest of the time.

I stopped DD napped at 2 years 2 months. She had always been mega difficult to get to sleep on a night time and then started to faff with daytime naps. Obviously I brought bedtime much earlier and she ended up getting more sleep over all.

DS dropped his nap at 2.9
I had a golden month when he was at Pre-school in the morning and slept for 2 hours in the afternoon, I got so much done! It didn't last Grin

Boyfriends child was nearly 4 when they dropped their nap. We were going to shorten it to 1hr as they weren't going to bed till 9 but just dropped it & they are in bed at 7 now.

Frlrlrubert · 05/01/2019 15:09

DD is 2.3 and we're dropping her nap now. She was a bit messed up over Xmas with late nights, lie ins and naps missed or all over the place, and when we tried to get 'back to normal' bedtime became a 3 hour battle, so we're trying without the nap, we're still not quite back to normal wake up time as I'm back at work on Monday, but it's working so far.

SoyDora · 05/01/2019 15:09

Both of them were 20 months. It was a relief, I didn’t have to faff with getting home from places for their nap (both would only nap in their cots) and they both slept at least 7-7 overnight from then.

BeBesideTheSea · 05/01/2019 15:11

4.5, but fell asleep on way back from school (whether on bike or in car) every day until 7 years.

louise987 · 05/01/2019 15:11

DD is 3 and she still naps for 2 hrs in the afternoon. She can go without it but when she is better rested mealtimes and bedtimes are much easier and she's a much happier little girl. I'm in no rush to drop it!

Thankyou .. my ds bedtime is getting v later and later it can take ages to get him off to sleep so wondering if I drop the nap whether things will be easier st bedtime too although I know I miss the break in the afternoons as he's a little whirlwind and have another year til he's in preschool

About 20 months. They napped for about another year at nursery a couple of days a week as they had to lie down and rest at nap time and fell asleep. On those days they then weren't tired at their regular bedtime, so the nap was just a disruption to their usual routine.

HLBug · 05/01/2019 15:26

DS was just over 4 - maybe 4yr 4/5 months actually. He was still happy to go down at 7pm so I didn't force him to stop.

HLBug · 05/01/2019 15:29

One thing I found useful though was an article which basically said you don't need to go "cold turkey" - I.e some busy days a nap might be a good thing. Or 2/3 naps per week and gradually cut back. My DS was actually worse at bedtime when he hadn't napped - for him good sleep is definitely linked to behaving better.

WeeDoughball · 05/01/2019 15:43
  1. He moved into the 3-5 room at nursery which didn't encourage naps but even at 4 he'll sometimes still fall asleep in the car. Slept 7-7 even with naps so it wasn't something we tried to stop.
Caterina99 · 05/01/2019 19:02

About 2.5. He either wouldn’t nap at all. Or if he did, then bedtime was a disaster. Probably took a few months to fully transition to no nap and we had bedtime ranging from 6pm to 9pm depending if it was a nap day or not. Now (3.5) he would only nap very occasionally and I don’t allow more than an hour (unless he’s ill of course) and it still messes up bedtime a lot. No nap and he’s 7-7 and asleep in 5 mins

DPotter · 05/01/2019 19:09

16 months. She just plain wouldn't sleep in the afternoon, even at nursery. she would throw toys at the other kids to wake them up apparently. Other than not giving me a rest during the day - she was fine

MarchInHappiness · 05/01/2019 19:53

DD was over 3 years but she was a horrific sleeper at night.

Both DS1 and DS2 were about 2 and a half.

mumshappycampers · 05/01/2019 19:57

My DD stopped at 18 months! I tried and tried, but if I managed to get her down for an hour, she'd just spend an hour messing about at bedtime when she clearly wasn't tired, so I figured she didn't need it.

She was at nursery one day a week, and she would 'help' the staff while the other kids napped!!

Trinpy · 05/01/2019 20:10

Ds1 was exactly 2 years old.

Ds2 is 2.9 and still has a nap most days but I've noticed both his naptime and bedtime are getting later and later recently.

In my (very limited!) experience, it can take months before they fully drop the nap. Ds2 does well with napping some days and not others. Ds1 had to stop his naps completely but liked having quiet time after lunch when he'd lay on the sofa watching TV and sometimes drift off.

bourbonbiccy · 05/01/2019 20:13

My DS is 17 months and is starting to miss his nap on a few days a week, he is fine on them days, but I would prefer if he would continue to nap

Figgygal · 05/01/2019 20:15

Ds1 was well before 2 Ds2 is 2.2 and is hit and miss now yesterday he didn't have one today he did but we were out in car and buggy

MichelleM30 · 05/01/2019 20:20

My lo is 20 months and has on some days started to drop her nap. I'm not surprised as she has only had 1 nap a day since before turning 1. She now sometimes only has 10-15 mins in the car or nothing at all. As others have said if she has a long nap then bed time is a nightmare! Least she sleeps well most of the time
