Hey everyone baby has been suffering really badly from reflux ever since birth she was originally on cow and gate 1 until 5 says ago where her reflux started to get really bad and so we decided that we needed to change formula as it was horrible to see her suffer so much plus she also has a bit of colic too which hasn't really settled. anyway 5 says ago we changed her to hipp organic which the first day she seemed ok on but then I started noticing that she was becoming uncomfortable during the second half o f her bottle she also started spitting up more which has been gradually turning into sick 24 hours ago I was giving her a bottle trying out a new anti colic bottle she seemed to take it really well burped well and then as we finished the bottle I sat her up and then she projectile everywhere this then happened on her following feed i thought that it may have been the bottle so used her old ones again and then since then she's been vomiting after every feed she even vomited an hour after her feed when I changed her nappy like she can't digest it. She hasn't slept much today either about two hours and didn't sleep well last night either I've decided enough is enough and wanted to know what I can do next as can't see her go through another bottle like that it isn't fair on her I was wondering what the aptamil anti reflux is like??? Thanks

Mine sprayed the room once, it was terrifying for me. But nothing to do with bottle or type of milk as she was breastfed. She had reflux too and I guess some babies more prone. She eventually got better once on solids but she was always leaking milk everywhere!

If she was ok on the cow and gate formula they do an anti-colic / anti-reflux formula.

SweetAsSpice · 04/01/2019 19:18

Hi OP, have you tried burping her throughout her feed? Giving her a little break throughout...I have a baby who is sometimes sick after a feed, she 'guzzles' her milk. HV suggested it and it has helped. She is breastfed though so I'm not sure if it makes a difference as DD wriggles around a lot, on and off, probably adding extra air too.

Have you seen your GP about the reflux, perhaps they can prescribe something to help?

She wasn't as bad as she was on the hipp one but she still suffered badly and it gave her horrendous wind too!

@sweetasspice yeah she is I burp her twice during and once after doesn't seem to help we took her to the docs about it a couple of weeks back and he said it's common and just to ride through it (which I didn't find it as very good advice as she's in so much pain with it) and he said that they would only look at prescribing after 6 months when she's supposed to have outgrown it

Has she had any wet nappies in the last 12 hours?

babylovexo · 04/01/2019 19:51

Yes she's had plenty

My DS was very similar and has a cows protein allergy, may be worth discussing with doctor if no sign of improvement?

kayakingmum · 04/01/2019 20:07

My dd couldn't keep her milk down when she was little. She was born of the 75th centile but dropped down to the 25th by the time she was 2 - 3 months old. The good news is she grew out of the problem and is now back on the 75th centile.

My point is monitor her weight but try not to worry too much. There probably isn't much you can do to get her to keep her milk down. I'm sure it's just a phase she will grow out of.

mathanxiety · 04/01/2019 20:13

Agree you need to investigate the cow milk protein allergy possibility. If this is the cause she will not grow out of it and keeping on trying cow milk based formal will result in a sick, dehydrated baby pretty soon.

You may need to consider either something like nutramigen or soy formula.

It’s probably just reflux. My DS was a puker. Every feed was carefully organised to minimise damage to clothes and soft furnishings Grin I had literally about forty muslin cloths and sometimes ran out of clean ones because he vomited so often and in such huge quantities. It was really forceful too. It didn’t seem to affect his growth and he stayed on the 50th centile pretty consistently.

However, he did find it quite distressing when it was really bad and at night I swear I could hear him choking. The latter was horrendous as he was so tiny and I could hear it gurgling and then he would splutter and cry. I couldn’t sleep and was resorting to unsafe sleep environments for him because the only thing that helped was sleeping on an incline.

Zantac (ranitidine) sorted it right out within hours. There were no side effects and if we accidentally missed a dose we would know almost immediately as the puking would begin again.

Once we started weaning it seemed to stop and nowadays he has no issues at all.

I think doctors in the UK prefer to prescribe infant gaviscon before ranitidine. I’d go to another doctor to discuss it, but if baby is really just puking lots with no other symptoms it might not be worth medicating.

My little one was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis at 2 weeks and operated on soon after. He would projectile vomit after most feeds and lost weight. Not to alarm you but have a little look into it and see if the symptoms ring true for you.

welshweasel · 04/01/2019 22:14

Projectile vomiting in a 6 week old is pyloric stenosis until proven otherwise. If they’ve vomited back 2 or more feeds they should be assessed urgently.

QueenofmyPrinces · 05/01/2019 07:48

My first thought was cows milk protein intolerance.

My second thought was pyloric stenosis.

Persistent vomiting in babies can make them get poorly as their electrolytes can become severely unbalanced.

I’m a paediatric nurse working with babies up to the age of two and we have a lot of babies who are admitted for investigation of persistent vomiting.

Personally I would go to A&E to get her properly assessed by a paediatrician.

CottonSock · 05/01/2019 10:19

In retrospect I do wish I'd insisted on investigations for pyloric stenosis. We went to GP but not taken further as she had wet nappies. She did drop a lot of weight and I was very stressed. Ranitidine treats acid, gaviscon thickens milk. We didn't try gaviscon as a faff when breastfeeding.

babylovexo · 05/01/2019 11:43

So we started her on the anti reflux last night and she is like a different baby no sick and seems comfortable and happier!! so going to see how she gets on over the next couple of days I'm seeing the HV and doc on Friday so will ask for advice anyway then but if she gets bad again before that I will be taking her to a&e or the docs to have it investigated thanks everyone

How are things going OP?

MumUnderTheMoon · 10/01/2019 12:11

My dd has horrendous reflux she vomited up every feed she ever had (both breast and bottle) I gave her baby rice at 6 weeks it was the first thing she was able to keep down and was a real turning point. She was on cows milk only at 4 months and completely weaned by 6 months. Now she is 11 she loves her food and is a sturdy 5ft. Just do whatever suits you both best even if it is a little unorthodox.

babysharkah · 10/01/2019 12:14

Is she medicated for the reflux?

babylovexo · 10/01/2019 18:12

She's been on aptamil anti reflux for a week tomorrow and my God has it made a difference she's now keeping down every feed and she's so much happier, completely different baby so pleased I went with my gut instinct on this one but seeing HV tomo so will let her know what I have done

@babysharkah sorry not sure what you mean by medicated? She hasn't been diagnosed by a doctor that she has anti reflux but she didn't need to go to the docs as it was obvious as to what it was so wanted to use the anti reflux powder first then if that hadnt of worked I would have spoken with the doctor x
