How do people stop their small children from breaking their TV?

Our 15 month old managed to pull our TV on top is himself and break it, on New Year’s Eve. He was fine. After and emergency trip to Argos, we replaced it. But 3 day later he has broken it again! He managed to escape from him play pen (helped by his 3 year old sister), climbed up on the table and pulled the TV over again! 😫 at £300 a TV, we can’t afford to keep doing this! How do people protect their TVs? Are they fixed to the wall? All suggestions welcome! 😀

My eldest is 11. Almost 12.
I've never had to take an emergency trip for a new tv.
Maybe try to secure it better?

CasDk · 03/01/2019 09:25

I thought you were going to say emergency trip to A&E, not Argos! Not all injuries are visible or show themselves straightaway. What about removing the TV completely short term? The safety of your child is the most important thing and no TV is a small price to pay until this phase passes.

IME a 15 month old needs watching pretty much constantly unless in a cot or playpen (and even then, some of them learn to climb out...)

Our TV is strapped to the wall with safety straps. So is any furniture that might topple if a child tries to climb it.

Jesus, you’re lucky he’s uninjured. I can’t believe it’s happened twice. We use the Baby Dan TV strap.

My kids are much older than yours but we still have the tv and other heavy furniture secured to the wall with safety straps.

Happyandshiney · 03/01/2019 10:12

All your tall furniture should be fixed to the wall with safety straps (bookcases, sideboards, chest of drawers, wardrobes). Every single piece.

Televisions should be fixed to the stand/cabinet or wall with safety mounts or straps.

Small children should not be unattended.

Our tv is not secured but we just supervised our little ones or put them in a play pen or hat they couldn’t get out and taught them to never touch the tv.

Foxyscarf · 03/01/2019 19:19

TV strapped to the wall. Very blasé attitude towards child safety, OP.

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 19:23

Ours isn’t wall mounted. We just don’t let them near the TV. Obviously at that age they’re supervised so easy enough to manage.

This reminds me of a woman I know whose toddler flooded her bathroom, set the living room on fire and broke oodles of other things in the house. She was whingeing about the cost of itall and went to the GP to get her child tested for ADHD Hmm

brizzledrizzle · 03/01/2019 19:30

You just teach them what they can't touch, it's not complicated to do unless they have additional needs in which case it is understandable with some children.

Di11y · 04/01/2019 22:30

we got a bar that fixed to the stand. don't get a strap, they're less.reliable.

gamerchick · 04/01/2019 22:32

I strapped mine to the telly stand and put a fire guard in front of it.

BertieBotts · 04/01/2019 22:38

Use a fire guard.

You might want to secure heavy chests of drawers and wardrobes if he's a climber.

For his own safety should he pull them over climbing rather than the cost of replacing.

Don't leave him unattended in a room with an unsecured TV, you now know the playpen isn't secure and safe so he can't be left alone really.

You properly supervise your children and then you'll find things like this don't happen.
