11 month old cut down fluid intake drastically

My 11month old has suddenly cut down fluid intake the past few weeks. Started whilst he had a cold and started to refuse the bottle and it wasn’t a fight to get any milk into him. I figured it was because he couldn’t breathe properly so was hopeful once the cold cleared he would return to normal but that hasn’t happened. We cut out his afternoon bottle as he completely refused the bottle at this time. The most he now manages is 350-400mls a day if I’m lucky, one bottle in the morning and one before bed. I’ve tried offering a cup of water/juice throughout the day in about 4 different sippy cups but he won’t put them in his mouth. At the same time he has also had to go back to smoother purées due to gagging and being sick on the lumpy pouches for 10months again previously seemed to be doing well on these. Have tried more finger foods etc but he’s also stopped putting any food in his mouth himself. My main concern is obviously his fluid intake as I worry it’s really not enough. Still having wet nappies just not as wet as they used to be. I try to get as much milk into his breakfast etc as possible. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has been through the same thing? I’m hoping it’s a phase that will pass as getting worried now!

I had this with my son after a cold, he'd gag on the lumpy purees and sometimes be sick from coughing so much. After his cold sort of cleared, he went back to lumpy purees after a week or 2. Hes now 8 months old and has been refusing bottles from 5 months . He will only drink his morning one (4oz) and evening one (4oz) that's it. (300-350mls a day on average) and lately it's less than that.. I also make my own baby purrees. I make them really stodgy so I can get as much formula in there as possible. I also give lots of cheese and yogurt for dairy. Fruit purees contsin lots of fluid , like apple sauce, i also offer water during the day, a sip is better than nothing. This has been Going on for 3 months with my son, he's happy, alert , and reaching mile stones and is also a little podge! So long as your baby is all of these things I'd try not to worry, just look out for signs of dehydration.

We use a doidy cup, could it be teething also? Some babies just prefer food!

From 10 to 12 months they only need 400ml of formula a day, if you are not BFing, so don’t worry about the quantity of milk he’s having. Just make sure you give a vitamin supplement each day Smile

Have a read of this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust. You’ll probably need from page 77.

If he’s still refusing finger foods in a day or so, and you can’t feel any teeth coming through, it might be worth booking an appointment with your GP to get his ears, throat and tummy checked Smile

Seconding op with that last bit of advice :)

@Kingkongkoala reassuring to hear similar stories so thank you! He seems his usual self just been very irritable today so then I start panicking it’s something more. He’s just had 6 teeth through at once but are all through now and just the top four to finish moving down. Not sure if they can still get pain with them moving down? I guess so!

@JiltedJohnsJulie yes started vitamin D supplement now and persevering with finger foods. Such a shame to see him going backwards as I feel he’s always been slightly behind with eating and so advanced in everything else. Hopefully it’s just a spell!
