DH and I are debating whether to let DS7 stay up for the bells. What age were your children when they started getting to stay up to see in new year?

DS was 7 last year he literally stayed up till midnight then off to bed, but still no lay-in

wendz86 · 31/12/2018 15:56

Mine stayed up last year age 6. I’m letting her and 3 year old stay up tonight but will talk 3 year old up if she’s tired .

Peabody25 · 31/12/2018 15:57

DS was 4 last year and stayed up. It was more a see how long he'll stay awake rather than actively planning he'd be up till midnight, but he was fine.

Ds was 6 and stayed up for the millennium as it was a big family party at his grandparents. Other than that I think he's usually gone to bed at a normal time until he hit teens.

EthelHornsby · 31/12/2018 16:03

Probably when they wanted to - although they didn’t always make it that far - presumably they can sleep in tomorrow?

chumbal · 31/12/2018 16:03

Mine are 13 & 11 they have never stayed up SadGrin

NotMyCircusMonkeys · 31/12/2018 16:05

I was 5 the first time I was allowed to stay up, to see in the new millennium.

BiggerBoat1 · 31/12/2018 16:06

Mine are 12 and they have never stayed up, but they have never shown any interest. If they wanted to I would let them.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/12/2018 16:08

Mine have always been out with us on NYE, even as babies, it’s always been a family/friends sort of evening.

IRememberSoIDo · 31/12/2018 16:10

Dd1 was 8 and dd2 was 3.5. It was planned the eldest would stay up as her cousins were coming over but nobody ever thought the youngest would last as she's a 7pm girl. She stayed up hugged everyone then said I'm going to bed which she did 🤣

babysharkah · 31/12/2018 16:11

Mine made it to about 11 last year when they were 6. They can stay up if they want tonight but I can't see them actually making midnight.

OvO · 31/12/2018 16:12

I said yes to staying up from the time they could talk and ask! They were over the moon at the yes but without fail they’d fall asleep well before anyway.Grin

I think they were around 9 or so before they made it all the way. But I’d let your 7 year old stay up if they’d like and can actually manage it.

PeanutButterLovey · 31/12/2018 16:16

Of course he can have a lie in tomorrow I'll prob have one myself as midnight is well passed my bedtime too lol . I'm not sure if he will make it to midnight either we are just deciding wether or not to have normal bedtime routine tonight or just see how far he makes it.

Mine were very young as they saw in the millenium.
It's up to you, no harm will come to them if they stay up.
My dd is 14 and will probably fall asleep on settee, wake up to see NY in and then go to bed.

MrsLettuce · 31/12/2018 16:21

There are always a huge amount of fireworks here at midnight (not in the uk), until last year I put the DC to bed as usual and then got them up for an hour or so at 23:45. Last year we were at a friend's house and all the children were staying up so mine did too (8 & 10). They'll be attempting to stay up this year (9 & 11) but I'm not convinced they'll both make it without the extra children to keep them going

NotUsedBySomeoneElse · 31/12/2018 16:22

I’m 32 and don’t remember ever NOT staying up for it. As soon as I understood the concept of New Years, I was allowed to stay up for it if I wanted to. At 7 I probably went to bed no later than half 12, but would definitely have been up to see Big Ben.

KennDodd · 31/12/2018 16:25

We have always had a child friendly party or something to go to so they always stayed up even as toddlers. The village I live in everybody comes into the village square at midnight for a few choruses of Old Lang Syne, I think we've given them lovely childhood memories, playing out in the street at midnight with their friends once a year. We're usually all in bed by 12.20.

KennDodd · 31/12/2018 16:29

Top tip somebody gave me once was if you are just at home, set all the clocks an hour or two fast so they think they're staying up until midnight but really it's only 10pm..

WombatChocolate · 31/12/2018 16:29

A lot of it depends on what you’re doing at New Year.
If you’re hosting a party or at a party/meal/event they are more likely to stay up. If you’re just at home with the immediate family and not doing anything special, why bother to stay up.....same for adults and kids really.

We spend new year with 5 families and have done for 10+ years. When the kids were v little they all went to bed by 9 at latest and adults then had a lovely meal. They are all above 10 now and all have stayed up for the last 3+ years - they eat and play games and watch films whilst adults eat their still adult meal. Everyone might have a simple game when all arrive at 8 ish and everyone will spend New Year together watching Jools Holland bring in New Year from about 11.45. The kids like to stay up and are pretty relaxed and low key now.....but it’s been worth them staying up since they were 7 ish as there is a party for them too.

Namelesswonder · 31/12/2018 16:30

As a family we have always gone to Hogmanay parties so DC have always been up at the Bells since toddlers

PoutySprout · 31/12/2018 16:32

DD is 8 and has seen in every new year since she was born.

Huffahouse · 31/12/2018 16:32

My 3 always stay up for New Year! Now aged 7, 12 & 15. We are usually at house parties and youngest has stayed up since she was about 2 😬😆

Piggyhoolier · 31/12/2018 16:34

Mine stayed up for the 1st time LY age 8. This year the 5 YO is staying up too, we’re not going out just getting pizza and snacks and watching films together plus holding a dance contest. If the youngest lasts the distance, great, if not we’ll just take him to bed. But I’m excited to spend the evening with both DC and see the new year in together.

WombatChocolate · 31/12/2018 16:34

And we always have a room with a bed made up for any kids who need to crash out ....but not used for last couple of years.

And everyone goes home now....prob by 1 ish. We certainly sleep until about 10. Never keen on v late nights and early mornings but fortunately we never had to get up before 8 ish, so soon after midnight was doable.

HotInWinter · 31/12/2018 16:38

Not a chance until they learn to sleep past 6am.
Doesn't matter what time they go to bed, they wake at 5.30. And I'm not dealing with that!
