Artwork disposal guilt!

Reaching crisis point with the volume of artwork that I’m storing. Trying to declutter the house as space is at a premium but I’m finding this bit pretty painful and I could do with some perspective!
I’ve found that photographing sentimental pieces/ornaments makes it much easier to dispose of the originals - am interested to know what other people do and how long you hang on to stuff!

I 'take lots to the office' as it's really really good.

Pick something to be on the fridge, recycle the rest (quietly, hidden so they don’t see it)

They (especially eldest DD) couldn’t really care less....I’m wrestling with my angst about throwing it away!

Ditto the mountain of school books that come home at the end of the school year...

Oh god, I've also got to deal with 'filing' the enormous Brownie artworks they do together. A recent one was approx 12 ft long! 🤦‍♀️

At home I either take a photo or put it in an a2 clip lid box that will go in the attic for the kids to sort when I die.

I've a friend, who is a hoarder, who has a son (16) and she spends the weekends dragging him round antique fairs and carboot sales as she's trying to complete a certain dinner service so she can give it to him when he gets married.

What I've learnt from this is that if keeping something to give my child impacts them negatively right now or will in the future then I don't want that.

Bin it all. Your DC doesn't care. My mum is a hoarder and has all my artwork from school. I couldn't care less! I bin all my kids stuff pretty much as soon as it's done. I do keep Xmas decorations made at school, mainly because they can get packed away nicely in the Xmas decoration box every year.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 27/12/2018 20:08

We keep it for ourselves. I've some very early stuff DS did but it's special stuff like cards he made me.

I've binned lots of other stuff.

Dh is, at this very moment, making up a scrapbook for each grandparent with photos, old artwork etc....

LadySybilPussPolham · 27/12/2018 20:12

mother 12ft!!!!

I too have a couple of giant boxes, rapidly filling. Pretty sure the DCs will not fancy sifting through them in any future house clearance!

I know! 20 brownies each demonstrating their unique take on the topic = lots of felt tips and a large amount of my recycling bin filing cabinet filling up Blush

I'm incredibly sentimental which is my problem. I get a pang about baby clothes too, eg the outfit my best friend from primary school gave me for dd, or the outfit ds wore to my sister's wedding... I love the memorabilia my mum kept for me (dd is using the duvet cover I had at her age) so I want to be able to pass on some things to the dc, but need to find a balance.

I give the kids a pile of their own and ask thegm to save 3 things for display and we say goodbye to the rest. I might take a snap of one or two things on the way by and that is it. I have a lever arch file of actually stuff so far - 3 children in, all of artwork producing age.
