Using potties/loos out and about!

Hi
At the moment we have to lug our potty everywhere - with a baby in tow as well this is a lot of extra baggage and I am wondering what the best alternative might be without spending too much money on yet more equipment!

DS is just 3 and this is week 6 of potty training. He is generally fine at home using a potty chair in the bathroom and is just starting to use the kid loos at pre-school. Tonight (unprompted) he used our loo with trainer seat. So my question is whether it would be a good investment to buy a fold-away loo seat for trips out?

Funny I never seem to see anyone else carrying huge potty around!! Does everyone else have a fold up potty or something? How long was it before your little ones got by without any extra equipment when out and about??
Thanks!

We've got a fold up (Toddle-oo) loo seat. Is fab - was v useful when DS was younger (ie before standing to wee), for out and about (although cleaned it whenever I got home and now it still goes on hols with us (he has a small bum!)

At least if you've got a DC2 you'll get quite a bit of use out of it.

Sorry, re potty (not loo seat) - lugged one around in placcy bag for a while, until I was confident he could always wait till we found nearest loo.

JackieNo · 26/06/2007 22:16

We've got one of those Toodle Loo things too - works pretty well, though it does flex rather alarmingly when DS sits on it sometimes.

Where can I get a toddle-oo?
We are also toilet training a toddler and with a baby as well, we just bung the potty in a plastic bag under the pram and it blends in well with all the other baby/toddler stuff...
Please let me know where I can get one!!

Smutti · 26/06/2007 22:19

Toodle-Loo - of course! Yes, agree Jackie - does slip around sometimes - fine now DS is 6 , when younger, had to lift him on to it to avoid it doing so.

Smutti · 26/06/2007 22:20

Think mine came from Blooming Marvellous

Balls · 26/06/2007 22:20

Everyone I know used to carry a potty in the bag of their buggy for this stage. It's short-lived, so go with it. Porta pottee and toodle-oo quite good but nothing is quite as easy to clean as a bog-standard pot.

flibbertyjibbet · 26/06/2007 22:20

x-posted. Just checked the website and it does look a bit flimsy, both my boys are big so it might not be suitable for us, will stick to carrying potty or the normal toilet inner seat around till he can hold on for a loo.

JackieNo · 26/06/2007 22:22

How about a portable potty, rather than the real thing, so to speak? No idea how much smaller than the full size ones they are though.

PeachesMcLean · 26/06/2007 22:22

Has no-one used one of those porta potty things? - a foldable potty with a plastic bag with something like a sanitary towel in the bottom. You then had the pleasure of rolling up the plastic bag and finding somewhere to bin it...

PeachesMcLean · 26/06/2007 22:23

x posts...

Smutti · 26/06/2007 22:24

For anyone interested - we've also got the Soft Trainer Toilet Seat (12.99) at the bottom right of the page linked by JackieNo. Only mention it because we had a couple of duff ones, whereas this one has pads underneath which stop it slipping at all. #

Toilet seats....mmm.. I must be bored!

Balls · 26/06/2007 22:24

Used a porta-pottee a zillion times and still keep it handy in the car for emergencies (like long car journeys)(in fact have some hilarious memories and am almost fond of the thing), but a bog-standard potty is still quicker and a little more robust.

PinkTulips · 26/06/2007 22:25

i just hold dd (2,5) perched on the edge of the loo, she's gine like that.

tbh i brought the potty round with us for the first week of PT when she was 2,2 and got so blardy irritated at all the mess and hassle i gave up!

Smutti · 26/06/2007 22:28

Anecdote time -had an hilarious potty moment with dS1. His consultant was running late, and DS declared he needed a wee (NOW). Loo was engaged, so popped round the corner with the potty... was then going to head back to loo to empty it , at which moment the great man himself appeared to summon us in. I laugh now, but my face was bright red at the time.

Balls · 26/06/2007 22:29

Er - loo is fine when there is one, but if you are walking through the park and they need to go, NOW mummy, then potty it is.

quint · 26/06/2007 22:32

the portable potty is great and worth spending the extra money (not really that much) we used ours everywhere, saved DD1 getting embarrassed (and us!)

IdrisTheDragon · 26/06/2007 22:32

Maybe I have children with amazing bladders but through two lots of potty training we've never taken a potty out with us (maybe we don't do enough walks in the park ).

DontCallMeBaby · 26/06/2007 22:32

ToodleLoo was invaluable when DD was not long potty trained and would have the screaming ab-dabs if held on a full-size toilet (very fraught experience in Sainsburys early on). Porta-potty got some use early on as well, when she just couldn't hold on, it still gets taken out occasionally - the theory is that it's if she needs a poo and we're in the park or elsewhere with no loo. She's never done a poo in it though, a fact I am secretly rather glad of!

Smutti · 26/06/2007 22:32

Quite true, Balls. Fortunately mine has never done No 2 s apart from at home/family's. I dread to think what potty-emptying could've been like!

IdrisTheDragon · 26/06/2007 22:33

Am also lucky that neither DS nor DD has had any problems with being held over a toilet.

LexB · 27/06/2007 11:06

Thanks for all the tips, looks like another shopping trip!! So far ds has wee'd in potty in middle of garden centre (he would have preferred to get potty out in middle of the coffee shop) and outside the library in the rain! Why no loos in the library??? Still this is all so much better than 2 in nappies and the battles over changes
