Help - advice needed my ds will only pee or poo in his nappy

Please help. I have been potty training on and off for a while. My ds has complete control of his peeing and pooing and as a result we are now at the stage where he holds in his pees and poos for hours and will not go until a nappy is on and gets very upset when his nappy is off and he needs to spend a penny. He doesn't like sitting on a potty, potty chair loo or loo seat and I have tried everything from bribery to stickers to playing with new toys on the loo. He basically knows what he has to do but is unable to let go. Does anyone have any ideas?

How old is ds? I had this kind of thing with my dd but with her it was poo she would'nt do anywhere but in a nappy. In the end we told her there were no more nappys as Asda had ran out. we put the potty in the bathroom and left her to it, she got so desperate she just did it. She was 3 1/2 by then though and had had 6 months of hell.

ds is 26 months and although lot's of people have told me about the pooh problem noone seems to have had the pee thing. I tried going cold turkey and he was so upset by lunchtime that I gave up. Have tried pants and he got so upset by wetting himself and still wouldn't let go on the potty

Did you decide to potty train him, or was it his decision? I know some children are ready earlier than others, but he's still reasonably young. We still have issues with dd's pooing in a nappy, but she became dry in the day because SHE wanted to, not because we were ready. After our first failed attempt, we left a potty out for her, but didn't insist she use it. She decided, at well over 2 and a half, that she wanted to wear pretty knickers, so we had a special shopping trip for her to chose some, she picked a drawer to put them in, and when she was ready to use them, she put them on. Don't rush things, it'll come when it's ready (now, why can't I ever see things this clearly when it's MY daughter??)
