How much screen time do your kids really have?

I have a two year old and I'm wondering if what we're doing is normal.

Loads. I don’t worry about all the nonsense about having too much. DD is 9 now but at aged 2 watched a few hours of Baby TV across a day.

There will be someone along any minute to remind you screens are the work of the devil and you are a terrible parent but best just to ignore them.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 17/12/2018 20:57

At 2, mine had quite a bit. I needed to get on with stuff. Could have been 4-5 most days.
Now they’re older, theyre on screens much less because they can do other things and I prefer them to not rely on screens for entertainment.
Maybe an hour on schooldays and about 4 on average in holidays.

When mine were age 2 they probably watched 1 to 2 hours of TV a day.

At two ? Not a lot. Honestly.
Suspect dc3 got to watch more than dc1, as life is different with 3 than 1.

10mins (one go jetter episode) if he has a dry day. It used to be nothing unless it was seriously raining or after swimming on a sat where they are allowed one movie. My husband and I are now deciding how to withdraw a bit so it's not every day. We also have a no games console rule. Our style isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. Do what is right for you. Every child is different.

We used to do an episode of something before bed. Octonaughts of night garden, so about half an hour.
Now at 11 and14 they are supposed to get 90 mins a day, but seem to be able to stretch that quite effectively.

I don't think it was much when DD was a toddler (maybe 2 hours per day), but DD spent a lot of time in nursery from 3 months and we lived in a country where there was not a lot of kids TV (DD is 19 now so no iPads etc), I suppose in the winter it was way more and there were a few DVDs shown.

We got Sky when DD when she was about 4 and screen time rapidly increased, part of the reason we got rid after about a year. When she was at primary / secondary school, there was a lot of after school circular activities so I didn't mind if she binged on a Saturday tbh.

My oldest son is 4 and he’s allowed 30 minutes in the morning and then probably has another hour between 4pm-5pm after school.

My youngest is 16m so obviously doesn’t have set screen time but will look at the telly every now and then in between playing. If I have some jobs I need to do I put him inside his stand-up activity centre and put Baby TV on for him. I normally do this about two times a day and he’s in there quite content for about twenty minutes.

Some days None, other days they could sit and watch a movie. So 2 hrs. It’s not something I try to control. But they’re not obsessed either, they have had tv days too when sick or tired or the weather is miserable. It is what it is 🤷‍♀️

chopchopchill · 18/12/2018 11:19

Quite a bit at the minute, far less in summer, shitloads when they get up at 5. Sometimes it's either stick the tv on or lose my shit so I refuse to feel guilty about it 😄

gamerwidow · 18/12/2018 11:23

Too much probably. She goes on screen before and after school and at weekends. We do other stuff too though like board games, craft and reading so I’m not overly bothered about it.

gamerwidow · 18/12/2018 11:23

Ps DD is 8

MumUnderTheMoon · 18/12/2018 16:56

My dd is practically attached to her iPad. I don't have a problem with it she plays 30 minutes of minecraft and 30 minutes of kids YouTube other than that she uses it to make movies, she sings along to music, she watches movies and programs about science and lots of other things. If she could read I'd encourage that but she can't. She has to be able to entertain herself and I don't see a problem with her having a movie on while she crafts or draws or tidies her room. Also some studies have shown that children who use tablets have better fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.
