Where does your 1yo sleep when away from home?

First time mum so apologies if this is a stupid question.. we'll be spending time at relative's homes over Xmas, probably for most of the day/evening.

My 1yo naps at least once in the afternoon and goes to sleep about 7pm so I'd like her to sleep when we're out. But where can I put her to sleep given she's able to crawl, cruise along furniture and roll? A bed is out of the question as she'll roll off. Do I have to buy a travel cot (which I'd rather not as don't see we'd use it again)? Can I put her on the floor on a made up mattress? A stroller/buggy seems a bit uncomfortable?

Any suggestions welcome!

At that age I just lay the buggy flat, lined it with a thick blanket and parked him next to me. Also popped on the sofa next to me with a firm rolled blanket sausaged around him so he couldn’t roll off or into the cushions (only done as awake, sat next to him, chatting- absolutely not to be left alone!).

By 1 my ds would only sleep in a cot. So yes I’d buy a travel cot, mine was £18 from ASDA.

Pram, floor, sofa, bed or on/with you.

a drawer from a chest of drawers makes a perfectly adequate cot.

I’d just buy a travel cot, I didn’t think we needed one but have been surprised at how many times we’ve used it

If you aren't spending the night and there is somewhere to put it, I would just use the pushchair. That would be different if your family don't want you bringing your muddy pushchair into their house, but if they have a suitable out of the way place to put it, that's what I'd do. Usually we just take them out for a walk at nap time, they'll have a sleep, then we park them up in the garden (during the day). I'd do the same at night if there was somewhere to put it. Travel cots are annoying and I hate using them, so I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to use one if I wasn't staying overnight. I'd probably aim to leave by 8pm ish though and just keep baby up as long as possible and then make an exit when it's time for sleep and he can sleep in the car on the way home. This is pretty much exactly what we'll be doing for Christmas.

A travel cot

TinselBee · 17/12/2018 13:13

my 1yo DS sleeps in travel cot, we picked it up for a fiver second hand, if we are planning to stay over someone's house or will be there until late.

But you could make a little cushion nest next to you on the sofa, I've done that in the past when we end up staying later than intended at relatives' houses. Should be fine as long as you do not leave her unattended

If you're not actually staying overnight, would he just nap on you, or snuggled on someone else's lap? At a year old, my DC would still fall asleep breastfeeding when they were tired, or in the buggy on a walk.

If you're staying overnight, then I agree with the travel cot investment - you'll be surprised how much use you'll get out of it. We got one for my DD 5yrs ago, and my DS is only just out of it at 3yrs.
If not, the pram will be totally adequate for naps and bedtime.

Alternatively we also have blow up beds with bumpers which have been brilliant - but again, only if you're at someones house!

Travel cot

Thanks everyone - think I'll give the pram a go but will rethink the travel cot as an investment.. hopefully will be able to pick one up in the Jan sales.
