Why is my 12 week old doing this?

My 12 week old cries, A LOT. he has reflux and I think he might have a milk allergy although it's not been diagnosed yet. when he's crying hes desperately trying to get his fist into his mouth and that's the only thing that stops him crying for a short while, although he's still not settled . it's actually kind of the side of his hand he sucks on. he seems like he's desparate to suck on something but I've tried him with 2 types of dummy and he won't have them, just spits them out. he's not hungry because he does it straight after hes had a bottle. any tips? it's so frustrating!

Sure it’s not teething? My little one cut his first tooth at just over 4 months he was really upset leading up to it, nothing consoled him, try nurofen or calpol see if it helps

Sucking soothes the pain from reflux so that could be why. Dummies do help but I know you have tried that. Is he on any meds for the reflux? Ranitidine will help with the pain

Poor kid, reflux is pretty painful and agree sucking on something can help relieve it. I know it doesn't help now but when you do weaning, it's likely to help reduce the reflux and the crying.
One of my closest friends weaned early (17wks) because of this and it worked v well.
BTW, advice at the time was to wean from 17 wks, no idea what it is now.
Check out Save Our Sleep for tips. It covers loads of topics, not just sleep. Was my most helpful book.

My 12 week old has silent reflux and has done this with his fists literally since he was born (the photo of him being weighed immediately after birth shows his fist in his mouth). He's on ranitidine now but still does this with his fists.

thanks for the replies. he is on ranitidine but it isn't making much difference. it's so frustrating seeing him desperately trying to get his fist into his mouth and still crying, when he could easily have a dummy but he just hates them :(

Would it be worth it to try switching formula to one that has no milk or whey in it ?
I breastfed, but stopped all dairy in my own diet when baby was about 5wks old and the difference in her after 2 weeks of this was amazing
(I would have loved to give her formula too but she wouldn’t take a bottle for me !!)
Trust your gut, if you think it’s the dairy then don’t wait for a test result to try to solve it - you know your baby best x
