Baby non stop feeding.... help!

Hi everyone!
My DS is 4 days old and can now not stop feeding! We are formula feeding him and it now seems to be almost every hour he is crying for food! (He is making eating faces and putting hands in mouth). Is this normal?? Should we feed him every time but just smaller doses? It seems incredibly frequent, bearing in mind he started every 3 hours, good as gold.
When he has eaten this frequent he is also throwing up a fair bit and it's breaking my heart.... is he in pain/distress?
First time parents so any help appreciated! GrinGrinGrin
Ps, my breasts are now humongous so may try a mix of BF and FF.... do you think this would help?? Would only be able to do alternates, not full on BF
Thanks!!

If he's being sick his tummy is prob full so wouldnt seem to me as if he's hungry, especially every hour. I'd look up about colic maybe and wind, maybe that's causing a bit of distress.
Me personally, hated breast feeding and stuck with bottle, so much easier to see what they're drinking and to keep organised, especially with xmas baby and so much going on around you! My baby was born last xmas x

try mixed feeding, it worked for me. you have lost nothing if you try and it does not work out.

dd fed loads, and was sick a bit too. she was a windy baby. we tried colic drops as well. lots of winding.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/12/2018 00:31

oh and they fed loads before a growth spurt. three days of hell and just as you think you are going to die from feeding them so often and lack of sleep, they stop and revert to routine.

I definitely don't think a 4 day old needs formula feeding every hour - growth spurt or not. DD is 21 weeks and FF but never went less than 2.5 hours even in the early days.

I'd say it's something else making him cry - probably wind - is he getting plenty up after feeding? DD had colic and would scream all evening with it until we changed her onto comfort formula and MAM bottles.

My ds fed every 40mins or so. I spoke to the hv and she said to feed on demand. I combi fed and then switch to formula at 1 month as my supply never really established despite me constantly expressing to increase it. I thought that would help but it made no difference. I was so glad bottles lasted 2 hours as i just had one in front of me at all times when he fancied a bit. He just liked little and often. I eventually at 3months introduced a dummy to stretch at the feeds and that worked really well. He still had the same amount in total but would go 3 hours between feeds. You have my sympathy a baby that feeds all the time was a nightmare. Everything took ages! I think i probs should have tried a dummy earlier as i think a lot of the time he just wanted to suck for comfort. I'll know for the next one lol

Sipperskipper · 15/12/2018 21:12

Congratulations on your baby.

Have you tried using a dummy? He may be wanting the comfort of sucking, but not necessarily the milk. It was a lifesaver for us and DD.

Also, wind really, really well after each feed. Don’t stop until you get up at least one decent burp.

Zaplolly · 20/12/2018 07:37

Thanks everyone!!! Yes I think there was an issue with burping as he doesn't as often as I would like (no matter how often I try!). Any tips??
Will definitely try a dummy too! Wink

I used to sort of sit DD upright on my lap, with her chin in my hand (sort of to extend her neck a bit if that makes sense, without sounding brutal!) then I would sort of gently roll her round from the waist in a circular motion, and then pat her back pretty firmly.

We also used Infacol before each feed which seemed to help her get the wind up easier.
