Poorly 19wk old. What to do?

Angeliki159 · 12/12/2018 00:23

My 19 week old has picked up a cold from somewhere and it's breaking my heart watching him struggle.
He has a horrible barking cough and a bunged up nose.
I spoke to my doctor to see if there is anything she can recommend I do, she said there's nothing I can do till he is 6 months.

He seems ok in himself, laughing, smiling, playing, wet nappies, dirty nappies.

Although I gave him a bottle at 8pm and he kept turning his head and spitting out the milk.
Then i gave him another bottle.at 11.30pm and he took it ok but he threw up the whole thing.

I'm a FTM so naturally I'm worried.

Been trying to get him to settle but he is so stuffy

Is there anything I can do??

If you are worried then ask for him to be reviewed at out of hours tonight, no doctor ever minds seeing a poorly baby. In the meantime can you raise the head end of his cot on some books? Keeping him a bit more upright will help him to manage the snuffles a bit better.

Angeliki159 · 12/12/2018 00:35

Currently on the floor in the living room with LO in his Moses basket next to me so DH can sleep.
Poor lil mite just keeps throwing up (and farting constntly)
Hope he can get some sleep soon

Hi , try little and often with fluids , also prop him up in the cot. I actually put books under the cot to raise it up so my little girl wasn’t flat. When I had my son he couldn’t lye flat and we used a pillow: it helped.

Try to keep him more upright, if you can pop something under the head of the legs of his cot.

Snuffle babe vapour rub can be used after 3 months, if you don't have some, stock up! Also olbas oil, I put it on a damp towel on a radiator, the humidity helps. You can get nasal drops/squirts or bogey suckers to help clear babys nose.

Also try feeding in the bathroom with the shower running hot, the steam will help de-bung baby.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 12/12/2018 00:37

Can you get something under the moses basket to prop the head end up? If he is still vomiting I would suggest it might be a good idea to call 111, small babies can dehydrate quickly.

Kaykay06 · 12/12/2018 00:48

Concur with propping up. Also small feeds more frequently will help if struggling usually they should take at least half of what they’d normally take when well. But if you’re at all worried call out of hours that’s what it’s there for and with such a young baby they’ll see no problem.

BlueBertie · 12/12/2018 00:54

Try holding him on your shoulder and steaming up the bathroom with a hot shower. Do you have a snot sucker bulb? Those can really help especially before a feed.

BlessedMamma · 12/12/2018 04:18

I had the exact same thing recently with my 2 week old. She was full of cold, could barely breathe and was projectile vomiting all of her milk back up (although not after every feed). The doctor said it was because of all the mucus in her throat and stomach. Saline drops and a bogey sucker are good at clearing their nose. We also use a humidifier with olbas oil in and prop one end of her cot up which helps. Hope your little one gets better soon. It's awful when they're ill and you can't do anything to make them better.

BlueMoon33 · 12/12/2018 08:25

I second the nasal aspirator / bogey sucker!

And snuffle babe vapour rub

Angeliki159 · 12/12/2018 10:53

Went out to get some snuffle babe vapour rub stuff this morning. His breathing is definately better.
He had half his bottle this morning but wouldn't have any more.
Gave him Calpol and he has just woken up from a nap with a huge wet patch on the mattress where his head was. Didn't think he was THAT hot.
I have put a cushion under the head and of his basket.

Just thrown up everywhere again
His last feed was 2 hrs ago.
But it was all mucousy
He seems ok otherwise. He's sitting blowing raspberries at me now!

How is your little one tonight @Angeliki159

Angeliki159 · 13/12/2018 11:13

Last night was tough
Tried snuffle babe on chest and feet (I always put Vicks on my feet)
Tried the Calpol vapour plug in thing
Tried putting books under the head of his cot.
He slept fine from 9pm to 12 midnight then he kept whimpering and crying so back downstairs we went.
He was awake most of the night crying.

His nose is so mucousy he can't drink.
He is having between 1 and 2 ounces every 3 hrs or so.
Managed to get 4oz in him early this morning but he hasn't really had anything since. Couple of mouthfuls.
Horrible seeing him like this ☹

Aw, poor thing. I third (or fourth) a snot sucker. Also, we always use a diffuser with olbas oil for adults and kids alike.

BlueMoon33 · 13/12/2018 12:27

If you’re worried about your baby’s milk intake you could also try feeding with a spoon or a syringe.

BlueMoon33 · 13/12/2018 12:31

And remember you can always speak to another doctor if you’re concerned. Or if your baby becomes floppy and hard to wake or any other extreme symptoms then just ring 111

DD is 21 weeks and just had her first cold. Agree with everyone else on propping up, this helped massively and luckily we have a Tutti Bambini crib that tilts for reflux.

Saline drops for nose to loosen it up and a nasal aspirator have been my best friends. I've just been doing this every time we had a nappy change.

The calpol plug in is very good too - it's not medicated but really clears the airways, was good for me too as I was full of cold at the same time.

Usual protocol - wash hands (yours and theirs) regularly and bin tissues and wipes straight away.

I stayed indoors for the first few days but then started going crazy so got her wrapped up and out in the pram and she seemed so much better afterwards - she actually didn't cough once whilst we were out.

tryinganewname · 13/12/2018 12:34

She also went completely off her milk, she wasn't a good drinker before the cold either which worried me even more but since recovering she's been hungrier than ever and is drinking more like she should be for her age now.

@Angeliki159 I feel for you. My 11 week old is the same as your lo right now. His temperature is up to 39 so just got a doctors appt for this afternoon. My mum keeps saying that he is nearly 3 months do just use more calpol and vapour rub but I'm wary of doing that. Will be checking with the doctor later.

Angeliki159 · 13/12/2018 23:19

I have been sucking his snot with o e of those bulb things. But he HATES it and bats me away.
He has managed 2 4oz bottles and a 3oz bottle today and a bit of porridge.
During the night he gets so congested he struggles to breathe.
I tried rolling him on his side and he could breathe better and fell asleep instantly.
I know you can't let them sleep on their side tho.
Rolled him back over and the whining started again.
Think I'm gonna be camping on the floor again tonight. ☹
That's gonna be fun with a migraine and twisted neck from last night. 😭😭
