poo smearing - advice on carpet cleaning

DS (nearly 3) takes off his dirty nappy at night and we end up with poo smeared on his bedroom carpet - i know from previous posts that others had had to deal with similar behaviour - any advice on how to clean the carpet (I am going to get it cleaned professionally - but need to deal with individual "events")

Here's what I do:

  1. pick up the top poo with toilet tissue and dispose of it. Don't grind it in, just pick up pieces that come up easily.
  2. get an old cloth towel or dried out wipe and pinch out (I'm not sure how to explain it, but you're trying to get the poo out of the carpet, so sweep upwards) what you can
  3. apply carpet cleaner and give it a couple of minutes
  4. do 2 again
  5. apply carpet cleaner and start scrubbing with new cloth or wipe
  6. do 5 as often as you feel necessary
  7. apply Febreeze

I have to admit that most of the time there's a time delay between most of the steps outlined. It is important to make sure not to grind the poo into the carpet when it's not necessary. For me, it's usually already been done, so I skip the "pinching" step.

I have a steam cleaner which used to be helpful (until a small child helpfully filled it with milk) and I've heard that steaming in carpet cleaner is good.

I would do the same as JJ but use Shaws spot remover instead of the carpet cleaner. It's fantastic, it removes everything (I have managed to remove a 5m old vomit spot that not me or the professional cleaner could remove with steam when the spot was recent, after the steaming I though it was fixed for good but I managed to take it of with Shaws which by the way it's used to remove accidents when you are potty trainning your puppy, can be found in most pet shops.)

Chandra, can you buy that online somewhere?

I pick up the poo and then scrub then wipe up what I can with kitchen roll. I then scrub the area with hot soapy water and disinfectant before blotting dry with an old towel.
