Almost 5 month old is HUGE

Anyone else have an absolutely ginormous baby!? My almost 5 month old is 24lbs, most people have never known a baby to weigh this much at this age. Is it really that unusual!? He’s breastfed, not on any solids yet and happy and healthy in every way. Just big and fat!

I wouldn't worry at this age. My DD was 22lbs at 6 months but is still only 24lbs at 16 months, as soon as they become more mobile they lean out a lot!

Is he long too?

Cosmoa · 11/12/2018 19:27

Awwwh I bet he's a proper cutie! My friends little boy was the same at that age. My daughter is breastfed and above average in weight too!

He sounds glorious Grin I love a chunky baby! Some babies are just chunks - I am friends with a couple who are both beanpoles and as babies they were both chubby, their daughter is exactly the same.

Thanks for your replies - glad to see the consensus is love for chubby babies!

If he can heave himself up and move about a bit soon, hopefully that will help. He's just not slowing down weight-wise.

Wow that’s huge! I have a just turned 2 yr old who is 23 pounds and a 4 month old who is 12 pounds....

When you wean I would stick to healthy things like fruit and veg to avoid obesity in future. Things will improve when he gets mobile.

FTMF30 · 12/12/2018 14:02

What's your diet like? Maybe that has something to do with it? That's just a guess though.

As much as people may love chubby babies, his weight is rather large and could lead to obesity when he's older.

MutantDisco · 12/12/2018 14:07

DS2 was the same at 6 months, EBF.

He's only 6 pounds heavier now and he's 2 and a half!

MutantDisco · 12/12/2018 14:09

babydreaming EBF babies can't be obese, and it's got nothing to do with mother's diet.

Both my sons were chubby babies and DS1 is now 91st centipede for height but only 25th for weight, DS2 is 75th/50th.

@mutantdisco I didn’t claim ebf could be obese? I said wean healthily to avoid obesity in the future! I didn’t mention Mothers diet.

Unfortunately there is an obesity epidemic in our population nowadays and I think it’s important to do what we can to prevent it when child is on solids! I appreciate there’s nothing you can do whilst they’re babies and BF!

Strawberryhat · 12/12/2018 14:38

My first baby was a real tank - always 91st centile, full of rolls and the roundest cheeks ever. Second is a delicate little pixie of a baby, 9th centile but perfectly proportioned weight and height. Both ebf and neither interested in solids until well after 1.

SinkGirl · 12/12/2018 14:39

Blimey - my boys are 27 months and 26lb! But they were 3.5 and 4.5lb at birth. I have a friend whose little boy is a month or two older than mine and was literally three times their weight for a while there. Once he moved to solids and started moving it stabilised. Is he going up through the centiles? How tall is he? If he’s following his curve I wouldn’t be at all concerned. If he’s going up through the centiles I would mention it to someone as there are some underlying things like endocrine and metabolic issues that can occur in babies (speaking from experience, one of mine has had both!) but it’s probably just the size he’s meant to be. Another friend of mine’s EBF baby has always been wonderfully chunky but now he’s approaching 18 months it has slowed right down.

Ah sorry baby it was the poster below Thanks

I think the obesity epidemic is due to parents fussing over children clearing their plates; not eating enough/too much. I've got two skinny children and I've never made an issue of food in front of them. They eat most things and a balance of healthy/junk food.

WWlOOlWW · 12/12/2018 16:49

Just got my baby book out because I knew my DS was pretty heavy at 5 months particularly as he was under 7lb at birth.

He was 21lb 4oz at 5months and 66.5cm long.

He's now a very tall but skinny teenager.

yetanothernewusername1 · 12/12/2018 17:20

Yep my now 10 year old was 26lb at 5 months. Born 7lb 13lb and averaged a pound a week for ages despite being exclusively breastfed! HV made me take him to a paediatrician who thought his rolls were adorable and wasn't worrying until he was mobile at least.
Now he's 5ft 1, 7 st 5lb and well skinny.
However we've received a letter from the council saying his height and weight were done in school and he's well overweight!! I'm dying to post a pic at how skinny he actually is....it's ridiculous!
