Wriggly / active baby

Hi all

My little one is 7 weeks today and I’ve noticed he’s so much more active/wriggly than other babies his age. He’ll never just sit quietly on my lap or anywhere for that matter. He is constantly wriggling and trying to move/ squirm. He’s constantly looking around and never really seems settled. It’s like he’s trying to take his entire surroundings in. I think he then gets over stimulated quickly as he cries quite a lot very easily. It’s not wind/gas - he just seems very inquisitive. It’s tiring especially when we’re out in social situations as I have to constantly walk around with him, bounce him etc as he won’t just sit quietly on my lap. Anyone else had this?

Been there and still kind of there at 5 months. If it's any consolation are kind of wriggly inquisitive babies are supposed to be very intelligent. Not sure how true it is not makes sense as my LO always wants to explore.

Yes my 11 week old is also like this but he was diagnosed with silent reflux so that was probably one reason why he was so unsettled. However, medication does appear to have helped but he's still constantly alert and refuses to be still (or nap!!!) so I think he's also just naturally like that. He seems constantly wired even when he's exhausted. I hope he calms down soon

My first DD was exactly like this, constantly wiggling and on the go. I don't think she ever really sat on our laps, we had to walk around with her and show her things wherever we went. I remember a friend telling me she that she took her baby with her when she went to get her haircut and I couldn't believe it. There's no way my little one would have sat on my lap for the length of a hair wash, let alone a haircut. It was really tricky in social situations as we couldn't really take her to restaurants or any baby classes that involved sitting in one place! She was much happier once she could crawl and then walking made things even better as she could finally be a bit more independent and a lot of her frustration was gone. She's almost three now and still a total whirlwind but gorgeous and funny with it. I feel for you, those first nine months were blooming exhausting!!

My son was exactly the same way! It was so difficult for me to be honest. All my friends who has babies said their babies slept all day while mine was soooo active. When he would begin crying I'd go on a walk with him and he instantly would calm down. My son began beginning to want to sit up at 3 months!! 3 months. I was shocked. He was so strong and began rolling over really early too. Now he's 16 months and omg he's like beyond what he should be doing. I still am quite shocked to be honest lol he does things 2 and 3 years olds do. My advice is be patient, and know you're not alone! I too had a super active baby. Cried a lot too, but mine had colic, switching his formula to a colic one helped so much. Xx

I have a wriggler. All the other babies sat calmly on their mother’s lap while mine squirmed all over. It is quite hard work. He is 7mo and currently trying to learn to crawl in his cot. He is very physically affectionate but it is something of a wrestling match! It’s just him and he is lovely

Loosemoose28 · 11/12/2018 21:20

My little girl was the same. No cute sleepy newborn photos here. She's now 7 months happily cruising furniture, standing in her cot and crawling at speed upstairs if given the chance. Great fun Hmm

elQuintoConyo · 11/12/2018 21:45

Oh yes, i had one of those.

Turned back-to-front at 3mo, crawled at 5mo, walked at 8mo+3wks! Totally totally not expecting that!

He is now 7yo and hasn't stopped! That awful expression of 'boys are like dogs - they need food and exercise' is kinda true about ds... Grin

He is a big ball of energy and delight, happy, curious, friendly, full of funny beans. But my lord it was tiring for the first 3 years.

I have one of those. Gosh, she was exhausting. If it helps, she learnt to crawl and cruise in the same week and was instantly a million times happier. She's now so much fun, and the moving around phase hasn't been a shock to my system like it has to some of the mums of sleepier, cuddlier newborns! It has its advantages and disadvantages and sometimes when I see mums getting lots of lovely cuddles I feel a bit envious but overall I'd rather have my wee whirlwind of a girl.

elQuintoConyo · 13/12/2018 22:31

peachgreen i still get amazing cuddles 7 years on Smile

I have one of those too. Walked at 10 months and is sooooo much happier! Had reflux so basically never lay flat for first 5 months. Desperate to sit. Health professionals always say ‘he’s very... active’ and then look at me as if to say you poor sod.

He’s very sweet but I am tired. It’s got easier now he can walk. He is probably going to be an only child as I’m an older mum (38) and the idea of having another is ...no.

A stretchy wrap sling was brilliant when he was very little, he liked the movement and kept him upright. I walked a lot!

@lovely36 are they still as active? Hoping it won’t be alot of work in the future as mind is also active at 3months
