How old is she ? my 2 get pocket money (£2 on a Saturday) for this they have to make their beds everyday (only a quilt so easy) and tidy up. There rooms have never been so tidy, especially my dd, I may have problems with her at the moment, but her room is spotless !

Good grief lavender, have you been on here all day? You seem to be on every thread.

Break it into chunks, I am the messy room queen since I was little, and sometimes I just don't know where to start. Tell her that she has 10/15 mins to put all the books on the bookshelves, then she can take a break. Then give her 10/15 mins to put all her dirty laundry in the basket, just keep going like that so that she has small, achieveable targets.

How old is she?
I'd be inclined to set aside a chunk of time (a big chunk of time ) and really bottom the room, take in a bin bag or two for stuff to sling and stuff to take to a charity shop
then use threats / bribes / rewards for keeping it like that
I think when it reaches the critical mass point, most kids don't know where to start - my DS1 is 15 and he has been overwhelmed by the mess before (and by me when I have found it like that!!)

And why would anyone berate you for having a kid with a messy room, FHS!?

when I was a teenager my mum started to refuse to have anything to do with the tidying/cleaning of my bedroom. After a couple of months it was an absolute hovel (there should have been flies circling). I was really embarrased about taking friends home! So in the end I had a major clear up and although I wasnt great (teenage angst and all that) it was much better!

I suppose it depends on how old your dd is. The pocket money thing sounds good

bran , I've been in and out all day...what's wrong with that? 15 mins at a time is good (in most things of parenting I am reasonable with this I am hopeless).

Bran that is genius. My dd's room is also very messy but she is only 3 months old. I think somebody in this household can really use your method
