Formula Feeding

My baby is currently being breastfed, but he is happy to take my milk through a bottle. I want to start replacing some evening feeds with a bottle so I can leave the baby with OH and get an evening to myself.
I'm going to express instead to make sure my milk supply doesn't drop and to start getting a stock of milk in the freezer.

I don't want to use the powdered stuff so I plan on using the cartons of ready made formula.

  • Can you use half the formula milk and put the rest in the fridge or does it need using as soon as it is opened?
  • How much mL of formula do you use? I don't know how much my baby drinks with him being breastfed on demand, and don't want to overfeed him. He is 2 months old.

There are guidelines on the bottle for quantities.

Yes normally once opened it needs to be used within 24hrs.

Powdered is easy and a hell of a lot cheaper if you are going to be doing it often.

I imagine about 4 oz at a time at this age. Powdered a loot cheaper though

The small bottles of ready made have to be used within 24 hours (in the aptimal ones there is about 7oz in them)

My lo was on about 4/5oz every 3 hours at that age

Your baby might guzzle the whole lot down if he's hungry, sometimes they have a bigger feed at some times in the day and not others. I'd say the powder will save you money and the planet, those little ready made bottles seem really bad.

Thanks. I googled how much milk a breastfeeding baby needs and it came up with a calculator. Based on average times they feed and his age and weight it came up with 88 mL per feed of expressed milk, so I’ll try him with a 90mL bottle of formula and see how it goes.
