Pu my 10mo in childcare/nursery and he's been ill ever since!

Just wondering if this is normal.

I started back at work PT in Sept and my little boy goes to Nursery 2 days a week.

Since then he's picked up all sorts and I don't think he's ever recovered. First it was croup - for which me and DH had to have a week off work between us and LO was very ill, it took him a few weeks to recover with cold symptoms lingering. Then we all had tonsillitis, then colds again with DH suffering worst with high temps, now my DH has a chest infection another high temp and LO and I both have colds / runny noses and LO has a nasty cough.

I honestly can't remember when he was last well.

I’m afraid it’s par for the course although some children seem to get ill more frequently than others. Their immune system needs to develop and starting nursery in the autumn / winter will always be worse than in the milder months.

I have some friends who only put their children in childcare later, at the age of 3, and they’re going through the same now. I think it just comes from being around so many more children in one go.

I recommend wrapping up warm and getting plenty of fresh air where possible to help strengthen the immune system.

We're the same OP. Since 1yo DD started in September she's had hand, foot and mouth, sickness bug, a chest infection and an endless cold. I'm just hoping it means once she's in pre-school she'll have had most things and be immune once she's in school.

Completely normal. My little one was ill for her first 6 - 12 months at nursery. She’s preschool now and much better.

It's normal, unfortunately. My dc didn't go to nursery until they were 3 but, boy did they get their illnesses all in one go! This time of year is the worst anyway. Mine are almost 5 and almost 6 now, and apart from the usual things going around in class, I think they have built some immunity. Your little one will be strong as an ox by the time they go to school I bet!

DD & DS were the same. It's horrific & we caught it all too Sad

My two are now at Secondary School & are fairly robust but it was a long wait.

Be kind to yourself & DC Thanks

So normal. My dd started around 11 months in November time a few years back and was ill for the whole winter back to back, the good news is she built up an amazing immunity from it!

Bobbiepin · 05/12/2018 12:01

Since starting in August DD has had a chest infection, a UTI, a chesty cough (viral), conjunctivitis, and a rash that could have been hfm but wasn't. It feels endless. She does have periods when she's well but right now they feel few and far between. She's got a constant runny nose now.

stiltonontoast · 05/12/2018 12:04

Right ok. That has put me at ease somewhat. Thank you!

What a crap situation for them, although I suppose we all have to go through it.

Any tips to strengthen his immune system? We already spend a ton of time outside dog walking every day so we've ticked that box.

Think of it this way, your child is building an amazing immune system for the rest of his life.

My DS was the same, I felt like he was always poorly and my MIL referred to him as a "sickly child" which made me flip out.

PepsiLola · 05/12/2018 12:18

My HV recommended vitamin D drops (put some drops in their drink).

It won't be forever they will get better. My DS is in reception now, and is rarely poorly.

I bloody hope so!

megletthesecond · 05/12/2018 13:33

Really normal IME.

However on the plus side mine have had hardly any time off school. The nursery years must have boosted their immune system.

Ilovewillow · 05/12/2018 13:34

My daughter had almost a permanent cold the whole time she was at nursery as did I when I caught it off of her but since starting school 7 yrs ago she's only been off school for three days so I suspect it helped her immune system - no comfort to you right now though I appreciate!

Rufus27 · 05/12/2018 13:35

Very normal from our experience. It does get better!

chumbal · 05/12/2018 18:00

Varied diet & fresh air.

If my two ever got really run down I would let them have a week off to recover Smile Although I understand this is not always practical with with commitments Wink

My Ds (11) was like this since he started school barely ever ill
