switching a sn child to reusable nappies

i recently switched dd2 to reusable nappies and fell in love with them. they're bambineos with poppers and i tried them out every so often on dd1 who has sn and she seemed to get on well with them. so i bought her some of her own to use but we bought swaddlebees pocket nappies which need a wrap and we're waiting for some more to come that don't need the wrap and a couple of fuzzi bunz.

when i put it on her yesterday she was fine until she sat up in it and then she screamed like she was terrified. i thought it was because she was over tired and put her to bed first to see if that helped. she fell asleep and when she woke up she was fine. i changed her nappy again and put one of dd2's nappies on as i'd only washed one of dd1's to try it out first. again she sat up and screamed. it was that bad that i took the nappy off and she calmed down but kept checking what she had on.

now i'm at a loss as at what to do. has anybody else had problems like this switching over? should i push it? i think she might be very mildly autistic after speaking to some of the mums in a sn mums and tots group we go to, would this change be too upsetting for her?

could it be the wraps i bought?
i used a keester kover wrap i got cheap from ebay but it's very very thick. i'm waiting for some wool wraps to come but maybe i should get another for now and see what it's like, after all dd2 will probably be in it in a years time anyways.

have you tried getting her to stroke a new clean one?

dd1 went into cloth at 3 years old and it took her a while to get used to the feel of them. she isnt SN (well posssibly dyslexia, who knows), we make a big delao f how soft they are on her bottom. she is now 7.

oh and if you think she is auti them pls get aher assessed soon.

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 09:19

she is in an assesment nursery and has just been accepted into our sn's school

she has digeorge syndrome and it does say that they have autistic traits with that. she has been seen by the local psychologist but it was only a 20 minute assesment

i will try doing that with her, thanks.

KK I think older kids can be a bit more sensitive to change anyway, DD is just over 2 and I tried out a new nappy on her the other night, she had such a disturbed night and kept pulling at the nappy that I eventually changed it and she settled well! Any little change can be a problem if there is an autistic trait (DS1 is autistic and I have spent 12 years trying not to make any sudden changes which can be very difficult), would she be happy to pick her own nappy at nappy change time when you have a few for her to try, that might help Good luck!

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 12:36

wow a complete change over now. we did dd2's nappy together, well she watched me. she signed nappy and was feeling the nappy. i said does dd1 want one of dd2's nappies on? she gave an oooh sound so we went ahead and i tried one of dd2's wraps that is slightly big for her and dd1 was very happy with it and still is. she keeps stroking it going oooh

so it must be the wraps she doesn't like. we're going to get some wool wraps soon but might order a couple of fleece wraps now to tide us over.

Choosing a nappy is a good idea.

We are having problems the other way at the moment - DD is ?mild AS. I feel she is ready for no nappy at night, but she is sobbing at the idea of changing to no nappy (despite bribes and explaining it will most likely help with her sensitive bits).

Flamesparrow · 23/06/2007 12:39

I can't remember... have you already ordered the wool? (Can never remember rl names and know I have one going through!)

If not, I have a pair of old style woollywraps pants I can send you to try out - not desperately girly (sea green), but you could try them and see if you like them

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 12:52

oh i think i ordered about 5 wool wraps from you

i was planning on using them on dd2 in the end then selling them on to justify me buying so many. i've just ordered some xl wacky wraps so they should be here on monday and again i'll be able to use them on dd2 then sell them on.

i have no idea of what to suggest for the opposite way around. i'll probably be on here in a few years time asking for tips.

lol - yup its yours then

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 16:40

she's totally fine now about the nappies now. strange seems as she was so upset yesterday. anyways has anybody else tried the swaddlebees pockets that need a wrap? it recommends using the microterry insert and the hemp and after the wraps is put on they look bloody huge. it says it's a slim nappy but this really isn't slim.

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 17:23

appart from being big they seem to work well, she's weed and pooed in it and it all stayed in the nappy. because she's so slim we get next clothes for her but now i might have to buy her some bigger clothes, my credit cards have seen better days

oop sorry, didnt read your profile about digeorge, (i'm not sure what it is, but doesnt it affect the heart in some cases?). she is gorgeous, i love her hair and glasses pics

glad that you have had a turnaround with the nappies, i remember dd2 running away from the first cloth ones after dd1 had gotton used to them and dd1 telling her 'nice and soft for your bum, try it lolly, it soft'

Flamesparrow · 23/06/2007 19:20

I tend to use just the one insert with that nappy... but then maybe DS isn't all that heavy a wetter

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 19:30

oh how sweet

and thanks she is a beautiful little girl and she knows it

digeorge has caused her to have a very complex cardiac condition but after two major and one minor op she's doing well (her heart op was actually a unique operation at the time). she also has problems with feeding (has a gastrostomy in), immune system, learning disabilities (she's more like a 12-18 month old), weakness in her muscles (she crawls but still doesnt walk and has more weakness on her left) but overall she's doing very well.

her behaviour doesn't appear to be (i hate saying this word) normal. after speaking to other mums i realise that she is like their children who are autistic. because she's only 3 and has so many other problems we don't think they'll come back to us about this for at least another year. i'm really suprised that she's taken to the nappies so well today, i hope it lasts.

which insert would be better then, the hemp or the microterry?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 23/06/2007 19:33

Oh wow, she is gorgeous isn't she?!?!

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 19:36

yes she is

she was born with loads of hair and it just kept growing, i hope dd2 grows some hair soon

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 23/06/2007 19:36

now i get confused with gastromonies. frequenting a heart board myself i shoud, now. is that a tube? a peg? a mic-key? or somethign else?

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 23/06/2007 19:37

what a difference in 'haioryness' between your two dd's dd1 had a mohecian, dd2+3 had full heads of jet black hair lol.

kreamkrackers · 23/06/2007 19:41

she now has the mic-key version of the gastrostomy so it's just a feeding button that goes directly into her stomach. we attatch a tube when we need to feed her and now she's able to handle it being gravity fed through a syringe. because of her reflux she had to have a continuos pump feeding her very slowly but at the moment she's off this
