Baby peeing - help please!

Hi Mums,

Long story cut short.

We noticed my 5 month old DS, was making sounds like he was doing a poop last week and everytime I went to check his nappy there was no poop but was wet so I changed it.

Turns out he was making these straining and grunting sounds when he was peeing although he was his happy, smiley self and drinking all his milk. Doctor noticed the tip of his penis was a bit red so prescribed cream and it went away over night.

The next night he woke up at 4am for a feed and as I lay him down to change his nappy as I always do in the middle of the night he pushed and emptied his bladder as his nappy was only a wee bit wet from through the night. It was like he holds in pee when he’s sleeping.

I phoned the doctor back and she said it sounded like cystitis and prescribed 3 days of antibiotics as a precaution against a UTI.

Do babies know they have a full bladder and actively push a little bit to get the pee out as he is now a bit older and more aware?

We’ve let him have his nappy off today and many times makes no noise/action that he is peeing and other times he pushes or makes a little noise when he passes urine.

Any of this normal? No change in colour or smell and he has no temperature.

Thanks again!
X

I think peeing at a young age is normal because I have a friend who has a son which is 4 yrs. old but pees at night while sleeping. You're doing good it is better to consult a doctor for your child.
