Babywearing Qs

Hiya, my DD is about 5 and a half months old, since she was born she has enjoyed being carried in the Baby Bjorn. We have a Close sling too but DH and I found that quite fiddly to put on especially when DD is screaming and writhing about (which she often was when she was tiny) so we've not really used it.

We are going out for a bit later to a place where pushing her around in the pram wouldn't be possible due to space, but it is probably going to rain when we walk there. Is it possible to carry her in the rain, what do people do, just hold an umbrella over baby? Also, her head control is now excellent and she enjoys looking around whilst being carried, which is difficult when she's turned in to our chest, but she still often sleeps in the carrier too. We are thinking about trying her outward facing in it when we're out because I'm sure she'd like to look at everything, but what happens if baby wants to sleep, would we have to change it and turn her inward facing? Her sleep/wake habits are erratic and difficult to predict, we just do it based on sleep cues like yawning and rubbing her eyes. Thanks!

We just use an umbrella with 6mo DD so far which works well for us so far but you can get waterproof covers - Marsupio something or other...? Not sure maybe Google it.

We use a baby Bjorn too and she can't really sleep outwards facing as I worry about head slump. I actually carry DD inwards facing a lot even when I don't think she'll sleep and it's surprising how much they can still see.

Ah ok, thanks for that. Do you fold the head support thingy down so she can see better? We just had a play around with it earlier when DH was wearing her around the house/yard and noticed you can sort of fold the head support thing down to her shoulders and that way she can move her head around and see better and then there's the benefit that if she gets sleepy you can lift it back up again and fasten it on to support her head for sleep.

She definitely should not be outwards facing it’s not good for her hips.

Rain - I just used a giant raincoat over my outfit and then fastened it round them too. They did have a little baby raincoat on with a hood to protect their head though. Nothing too bulky so they didn’t overheat. This was for country walks though where an umbrella wouldn’t really be used by anyone. If you’re just running to the car or whatever then an umbrella would be fine.

We would often start off forward facing and if I thought they needed a nap I’d swop them round. But they can see quite a lot facing inwards too.

Mine outward faces because she won't go on a pram and screams facing inwards. It's not advised for long periods due to overstimulation and hip positioning but is perfectly fine now and again. We use an Ergobaby 360.

We ended up taking her inwards facing on the 20 min walk there as she was doing sleep cues so we thought she'd nap...WRONG! We turned her outwards facing when we got there because she was wide awake and trying to watch everything going on, she was like that for about an hour then we turned her inwards facing again for the walk home where she slept for like 10 minutes of the walk Hmm. She seemed to like being able to see better, but you're right, with the back panel folded down to her shoulders she can see quite good anyway even facing inwards.

Thanks for the tip about the hips, I guess we won't keep her outwards facing for long periods of time in that case, but then we wouldn't anyway because she would need to sleep at some point, she naps frequently as she only cat-naps.

She did spend the whole time outwards facing sucking the panel as it was just about her mouth level, BLEURGH.
